[edit] Route description
After departing route 21, NY 488 runs east-west for just over six miles until the hamlet of Orleans, where the route turns to the north, paralleling the former path of the Pennsylvania Railroad through the region. The road crosses over an old railroad grade before reaching its northern terminus at NY 96 midway between the village of Phelps and Clifton Springs. Midlakes High School is located on the northern terminus.
Despite having an east-west alignment for two-thirds of its length, the route is signed north-south along its entire length.[2]

[edit] History
The entire length of NY 488 was once part of NY 88. Prior to its truncation to its current southern terminus, NY 88 traveled west out of Phelps, overlapping route 96 before turning south onto present-day NY 488. NY 88 then ran the length of route 488 to route 21, where routes 21 and 88 overlap to Canandaigua.[3] NY 88 then ended at NY 332.[4]
