[edit] Route description
The designation begins at the US 20/NY 5/NY 64 concurrency in Bloomfield. This intersection was also the former eastern terminus of NY 20C. NY 444 follows the former north-south routing of NY 20C north to Holcomb, now part of Bloomfield. At the former Four Corners of Holcomb, the former routing of NY 20C turns west onto West Main Street, an extension of County Road 30, while NY 444 continues north onto Victor-Bloomfield Road, which was formerly County Road 3.
Near Boughton Hill, NY 444 becomes Maple Avenue and passes the Ganondagan State Historic Site. Farther north, NY 444 enters the village of Victor, crossing the Ontario Central Railroad and ending at the intersection of Maple Avenue, Moore Avenue and Main Street (NY 96) in the center of the village.
[edit] History
The section of modern NY 444 from Main Street in Holcomb (the Four Corners) south to the US 20/NY 5/NY 64 concurrency in East Bloomfield was designated as part of NY 20C by 1947.[3] In 1990, NY 20C was removed from Main Street in Bloomfield and Holcomb, leaving only the Maple Avenue portion of NY 20C (what became NY 444) intact.[4] North of Holcomb, the modern alignment of NY 444 was maintained by Ontario County from the Holcomb (now Bloomfield) village line to the Victor village line as County Road 3.[5]
On September 1, 1996, ownership and maintenance of CR 3, as well as Elm Street in Bloomfield (former Holcomb), was transferred to New York State as part of a highway maintenance swap that turned control of six reference routes over to Ontario County and two other reference routes over to the town of Canandaigua.[5] The newly acquired roadway between Bloomfield and Victor, as well as the remaining piece of NY 20C from Routes 5, 20 and 64 south of Bloomfield to the former Holcomb Four Corners, was redesignated as NY 444 on June 2, 1997.[2]
