[edit] Route description

Route 442 begins at an intersection with New York State Route 22 in Peru.[3] The state-maintained road heads eastward, intersecting with local roads before leaving Peru. For a brief distance, Routes 442 and 22 parallel, but 22 turns to the north while Route 442 continues eastward. Soon after the intersection with Danshaw Road, Route 442 interchanges with the Adirondack Northway (I-87). The highway heads through Laphams Mills, a small hamlet and terminates at U.S. Route 9 (the Lakes to Locks Passage), just east of Ausable Point.[3]

[edit] History

Route 442 was assigned to its current route in 1971.[2] The route, when established, was not maintained by the state, although it had a state designation. Instead, it was maintained by Clinton County, which did not give it a county designation. In 1988, the highway was given to the state control during a maintenance swap, which gave New York State Route 22 north of U.S. Route 11 in Mooers to the county. The route has been under state control ever since.[4]
