[edit] Route description

Route 41 begins at Interchange 82 of New York State Route 17 in McClure.[3] There is a short intersection with School House Road before heading north into rural regions of New York. Route 41 intersects with local roads in McClure, turning to northwest, and the north soon after. At 3.75 miles (6.03 kilometres), Route 41 intersects with North Sanford Road before turning to the northeast towards Chenango County.[4]

Route 41 continues through rural regions and enters Chenango County at 11.88 miles (19.11 kilometres). Route 41 heads through twists and turns, intersecting with Chenango County Route 26 and Interstate 88 in Afton.[5] Route 41 turns to the northeast in Afton, intersecting with New York State Route 7 after parallelling it for some time. After a short concurrency with Route 7, Route 41 heads northward out of Afton. Route 41 heads through rural regions again, intersecting with Chenango County Route 17 (Morgan Hill Road) at 17.82 miles (28.67 miles) in North Afton.[6]

Routes 41 and 17 parallel and cross through a small forest.[6] Route 41 turns to the west and becomes concurrent with New York State Route 206 at 22.70 miles (36.53 kilometres) in Coventry.[7] As Routes 41 and 206 heads westward, New York State Route 235 terminates. The two roads head through rural areas and intersects with Chenango County Route 32. CR 32 becomes concurrent as well, and all three roads head into Greene. At an intersection with New York State Route 12, Route 41 turns off 206 and heads concurrent along Route 12.[8] The concurrency is short, and Route 41 heads to the northwest again through more rural regions of the state.[8] After an intersection with Chenango CR 3, Route 41 becomes concurrent with Chenango CR 2 until the two roads split. Route 2 heads north and intersects New York State Route 220 soon after. Route 41 turns to the northeast and enters Cortland County. Route 41 enters Lakeville, passing a small lake and heading to the north again. In Willet, New York State Route 26 becomes concurrent with Route 41.[9] New York State Route 221 terminates during the concurrency, which ends soon after.[9]

Route 41 heads to the northwest, entering East Freetown, where it turns to the north. Route 41 heads through hamlets in Cortland County, intersecting with Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 11 in Pokeville, west of McGraw.[10] Route 41 enters the city of Cortland and becomes concurrent with US Route 11. The concurrency ends in Homer as Route 41 heads to the northwest and intersects with New York State Route 281.[11] Route 41 intersects with its only suffixed route at 73.04 miles (117.54 kilometres). Route 41 heads through rural areas before entering Onondaga County.

In Onondaga County, Route 41 enters the town of Spafford, where it begins to parallel Skaneateles Lake.[12] Route 41 becomes known as East Lake Road and heads to the northeast. At Borodino, a hamlet off the coast of Skaneateles Lake, New York State Route 174 begins. Route 41 continues along the coastline, parallelling its suffixed route. Both Route 41A and Route 41 come to an end at U.S. Route 20 in Skaneateles.[13]

[edit] History

In the 1920s, the road connecting the village of Skaneateles to the village of Homer via the east side of Skaneateles Lake was formerly a numbered state highway designated as New York State Route 70 with a length of 26 miles.[14] Further south, the road leading southeast from the city of Cortland, through Greene at the Chenango River, to Afton at the Susquehanna River (a distance of 54 miles) had been an unnumbered road.[14] In the 1930 state highway renumbering, the entire length of old Route 70 was incorporated into the newly established New York State Route 41. This new route was, at the time, designated from McClure (beginning at an intersection with New York State Route 17) through Afton and Greene to Cortland, then overlapped with US 11 to Homer from which it used Old Route 70 to reach US 20 in Skaneateles.[2] The new Route 41 continued further north to the village of Jordan (at New York State Route 31) along what was previously known as NY 31A prior to 1930.[14] When initially created in 1930, NY 41 was 112 miles long.[15] By 1938, several spur routes of NY 31 were reconfigured in the area and the portion of NY 41 north of Skaneateles was renumbered to NY 31C shortening NY 41 to its current length.[16] The south end of NY 41 was shifted slightly with the opening of the Southern Tier Expressway in 1960.[17] Portions of NY 41 between Cortland and Willet, and in the portion concurrent with NY 206, have also been reconstructed and widened over the years.[citation needed]
