[edit] Route description

The western terminus of Route 418 is in Warren County at an intersection with County Route 4 (Athol Road) in Athol, near the base of Sugarloaf Mountain. It heads eastward, crossing the Hudson River and passing into the town of Warrensburg.[3] Route 418 continues, now as River Street, and intersects with Hickory Hill Road, a road leading to the base of The Three Sisters mountains. The road curves around mountains and continues to parallel the river as it heads towards the hamlet of Warrensburg.[4]

Route 418 intersects with several local roads in Warrensburg; at 3.5 miles (5.6 km), River Street continues along the bank, but the route turns onto Richard Street and crosses the Hudson River. After intersecting with Elm and Water Streets, Route 418 ends at U.S. Route 9.[4]

[edit] History

Route 418 was assigned to its current route alignment by 1935.[2] At some point in time, the entire length of Route 418 was included as part of the Dude Ranch Trail, a scenic byway that connects Lake George to the Hudson River.[5]

Parts of Route 418 are proposed to be used in a Hudson River revitalization program. The program would revitalize the history along the Hudson including things like rail lines. Route 418 near the intersection with Athol Road (County Route 4) is included, an area that includes low commercial systems and high residential and agricultural systems. Other things included are the privately-owned train station along NY 418 near the bridge crossing it, the nearby railroad bridge and two vacant lots on the highway itself.[6]
