[edit] Route description

Route 392 begins at an intersection with New York State Route 13 and New York State Route 38 in Dryden. The road quickly leaves Dryden, heading eastward through Tompkins County. Route 392, known as Virgil Road, turns to the southeast quickly before turning to the northeast. The area 392 crosses through is mostly rural, passing farmlands and small local roads. After 2 miles, Route 392 leaves Tompkins County for Cortland County.[2]

Route 392 intersects with County Road 127A before turning to the northeast again at Owego Hill Road. The highway enters the town of Virgil and intersects with New York State Route 215 and Cortland County Route 125. Here, Route 392 turns to the east and continues for several miles before turning the southeast gradually. As Route 392 enters Messengerville, the route turns the north and terminates at U.S. Route 11 just before Interstate 81.[2]

[edit] History

The original NY 392 ran between Ithaca and Varna in Tompkins County, but was removed from the state highway system in the early 1970s. It ran along University Avenue from downtown Ithaca to Lake Street, then east to the Cornell University campus. On campus, Lake Street becomes Forest Home Drive and runs alongside Fall Creek. NY 392 followed Forest Home Drive through the hamlet of Forest Home northeast of campus to NY 366 in Varna.[3]

Present-day NY 392 (from Virgil to Messengerville) was originally part of New York State Route 90, before NY 90's length in Cortland County was scaled back in the early 1980s.[4] Reference markers along this stretch of NY 392 still carry the 90 designation
