[edit] Route description

Route 38A begins at NY 38 in Moravia. It proceeds west, then north, passing to the south of St. Patrick's Cemetery. It then crosses a small stream before heading almost due north, or slightly east of north. Route 38A enters Wilson Corners before heading north and entering Globe Hotel Corners. Traveing almost parallel to Route 41A, it turns slightly west-northwest. It enters Niles, heads north, and intersects Route 359. It then bears west, traveling to the south of the Dutch Hollow Country Club. Route 38A now enters Cayuga County from Onondaga County.[3]

Route 38A now heads west, then north following along the northeastern shore of Owasco Lake. It crosses a small stream, then enters Highland Beach. It travels near the Lakeview Golf and Country Club, and then passess near the Owasco Country Club. It travels through Emerson Park, while passing north of Melrose Park. It travels nearly parallel to a small creek before intersecting with Route 72. It turns west, and intersects Route 38 as it begins to enter Auburn. Known as Owasco Street as it has been the majority of the routing, it heads north, splits up into two parts, and intersects U.S. Route 20. It then becomes known as North Fulton Street, and ends at Route 5 in Auburn.[4]

[edit] History

When state highways in New York were signed in 1924, the segment of modern NY 38A between its southern terminus in Moravia and NY 359 in Skaneateles was designated as part of NY 26, a north-south highway extending from Ithaca to Syracuse.[5] In the 1930 renumbering, the segment of NY 26 from Dryden to Moravia was renumbered to NY 38[6] while the piece of NY 26 from Moravia to current NY 359, as well as a previously unnumbered roadway from what is now NY 359 to Auburn, was designated as NY 38A, an alternate route of NY 38 around the east side of Owasco Lake.[2]
