[edit] Route description

NY 373 begins at U.S. Route 9 in Ausable Chasm. Located entirely within Adirondack State Park, the route intersects County Route 71 and heads east-southeast, just north of the Ausable River. The highway intersects County Route 17 and after intersecting several local roads, it turns east-northeast. NY 373 passes south of a golf course and enters Port Kent, where it intersects with a few more local streets and turns northward for a short time. Route 373 crosses a pair of train tracks and comes to an end at the Burlington-Port Kent Ferry landing.[2]

[edit] History

Route 373 was assigned by 1936 on its current routing.[3] However, the highway for its entire length was not maintained by State of New York. Instead, it was maintained by the town of Port Kent. On April 1, 1985, Route 373 was turned over to the state in a maintenance swap with Essex County.[4]

The Burlington-Port Kent Ferry is the ferry that connects Route 373 and the hamlet of Port Kent to the city of Burlington, Vermont. This, one of three ferries to cross Lake Champlain, is the longest as it crosses the widest part of the lake. It is maintained by the Lake Champlain Transportation Company, which allows ships to go along this route in all seasons but Winter.[5] On August 22, 1975, a ship heading along the ferry route crashed into Ferris Rock on the way to Burlington. 124 people on board had to evacuate, with 115 being rescued.[6][7]
