NY 303 begins at the New Jersey-New York border in Tappan. Directly south of the border is Northvale, in which NY 303 continues as Bergen CR 505. NY 303 begins as a four-lane route, with mostly full access, and will keep this status until Valley Cottage. As it progresses northward, it intersects the Palisades Interstate Parkway at Exit 5 in Tappan. In fact, this is the first exit in New York for the Palisades. Right after the Palisades interchange, NY 303 enters Orangeburg. There NY 303 intersects NY 340 at its northern terminus. NY 303 also intersects CR 20 at this location. At these intersections, NY 303 provides links to St. Thomas Aquinas College and Dominican College. Just to the east on NY 340 is St. Thomas, and just to the west on CR 20 is Dominican.[3]

NY 303 then proceeds north into Blauvelt. Here, NY 303 runs along the western border of Clausland Mountain County Park, Blauvelt State Park, and other town parks. In fact, NY 303 shares a brief concurrency with CR 11, because the county route is shifted west because of the state park. NY 303 then intersects NY 59 in Central Nyack. After the interchange, NY 303 enters West Nyack, and passes the Palisades Mall NY 303 intersects the New York State Thruway (I-87/I-287) at Exit 12. Because of the Palisades Mall, the onramps were reconstructed. The driver must enter the Palisades Mall parking lot to reach the Thruway northbound. The entry to southbound I-87/I-287 is much easier.[3]

Just after the Palisades Mall, NY 303 briefly turns from a four-lane road to a four-lane divided highway in Valley Cottage. That is short lived, and at Storms Rd, NY 303 reverts to a two-lane route. NY 303 then enters Congers. NY 303 passes Congers Lake (on the left) right before its intersection with CR 80. After its intersection with CR 80, NY 303 proceeds toward its northern terminus at US 9W. NY 303 ends in Congers, less than a mile from the Haverstraw town line and NY 304's northern terminus. The intersection between NY 303 and US 9W is a mere 7/10 of a mile south of the intersection of NY 304 and US 9W.[3]

[edit] History

NY 303 was largely assigned to its current alignment in the 1930 renumbering. Originally, the route followed Greenbush Road in Orangeburg and Central Nyack, and Kings Highway and Old Haverstraw Road in Congers.[2]

The interchange with the New York State Thruway was redesigned to accommodate the addition of the Palisades Center - a major shopping mall. The mall was built where the formerly proposed interchange with the New Jersey Turnpike -- Northern Extension was originally supposed to terminate.
