New York State Route 29A is a state highway in New York, running from the Herkimer County hamlet of Salisbury Center to the Fulton County hamlet of Vail Mills.

NY 29A enters Gloversville via Rose Street, continuing on West Fulton Street, through downtown, then East Fulton Street. Originally Route 29A turned right on Saratoga Boulevard (as evidenced by NYS DOT reference markers appearing on the portion of that street outside the city). 29A then continued via Steele Avenue Extension to Route 29 about two miles away.

Later, 29A was taken off Saratoga Boulevard, and was concurrent with Route 30A to its crossing with Steele Avenue Extension, following Steele Avenue Extension after that. In 1983, 29A was removed from Steele Avenue Extension as well as the concurrency with Route 30A. Route 29A from that point forward followed the Turkey Farm Road, which meant no turns, to its present terminus at Route 29 west of Vail Mills.

[edit] History

NY 29A originally followed Steele Avenue Extension from the city line of Gloversville to NY 29 in the town of Johnstown. The original routing of NY 29A had it turning off East Fulton Street onto Saratoga Boulevard, meeting with Steele Avenue and continuing as its extension to NY 29. The reference markers outside Gloversville illustrate this original alignment.

When NY 30A, the Arterial, was opened, NY 29A was rerouted to remain on East Fulton Street to the Arterial, where it turned right and overlapped 30A to its intersection with the original route. Later, 29A was routed to the nearby Turkey Farm Road, reaching NY 29 three miles farther east, closer to Vail Mills. 29A markers remain on the Steele Avenue route (2.08 miles (3.35 km) in length), but is inventoried by NYSDOT as New York State Route 920J, an unsigned reference route.[1]
