[edit] Route description
NY 291 begins at NY 69 in the town of Whitestown, just north of the village of Whitesboro. It travels northeast from this point, crossing over and briefly paralleling the Mohawk River as it enters the town of Marcy. At Careys Corners, a small community 1 mile (1.6 km) from NY 69, NY 291 traverses the Erie Canal prior to intersecting NY 49 at a grade-separated interchange. After another mile (1.6 km), NY 291 heads north at a fork with Hayes Road, and continues toward the hamlet of Marcy.
In Marcy, NY 291 intersects Fox Road. NY 291 continues north, and intersects with several other local roads on its way to Stittville, a small hamlet on the banks of Ninemile Creek. The route crosses over the creek before ending at NY 365 about one mile south of the village of Holland Patent.
[edit] History
The portion of NY 291 between NY 69 and River Road was originally designated as part of NY 11 in 1924.[3][4] NY 11 was renumbered to NY 76 in 1927 to eliminate the numerical duplication with the newly-designated U.S. Route 11.[5] In the 1930 renumbering, the portion of NY 76 from modern NY 69 to River Road was incorporated into the new NY 12C, an alternate route of NY 12 between Utica and Barneveld.[6] The NY 12C designation was deleted and replaced with NY 291 from Whitestown to the Marcy hamlet of Stittville on January 1, 1970.[2] Reference markers for NY 291 north of NY 49 still read "12C".[1]
