Communities

Like Manitou Road in Greece, which changes from a county route to NY 261 after crossing NY 104, Union Street transitions from Monroe County Route 170 to NY 259 at an intersection with NY 33A in West Chili. Just north of this intersection, NY 259 interchanges with Interstate 490 at exit 4. Continuing on, the route crosses the CSX West Shore Subdivision as well as the Rochester Subdivision prior to intersecting NY 33 in North Chili.

Now South Union Street, NY 259 takes a direct north-south alignment between North Chili and Spencerport. Over this stretch, NY 259 comes into contact with NY 531 (the Spencerport Expressway) and NY 31. Outside of Spencerport, the route turns into North Union Street and swerves to the northeast before returning to a northerly alignment at an intersection with NY 104 near Parma Corners, where it becomes Hilton-Parma Corners Road.

To the north of NY 104, NY 259 intersects NY 18 south of Hilton. The two routes then join for a two mile concurrency that enters the village of Hilton before it separates. NY 18 proceeds west towards Niagara Falls while NY 259 continues north.

At this point, NY 259 undergoes a name change just outside of Hilton, changing from Lake Avenue within the village to North Avenue outside of Hilton as it continues toward Lake Ontario. Beginning at an intersection with Curtis Road in the town of Hilton, North Avenue also becomes Monroe County Route 226. This designation follows NY 259 northward to the northern terminus of NY 259 at the Lake Ontario State Parkway. Though NY 259 ends here, the CR 226 designation continues northward, terminating at North Avenue's north terminus a mere 50 yards from the lake shore at a dead end.

[edit] History

NY 259 was assigned to its current alignment between NY 33A and NY 18 by 1947.[2] The route was extended northward by 1961 to meet the Lake Ontario State Parkway near the Lake Ontario shoreline.[3]
