[edit] Route description

NY 251 is about 18 miles long and, with the exception of a three mile stretch in Ontario County, is located entirely within Monroe County. The road maintains a perfect east-west alignment except for three sections located near its eastern terminus in Victor, another in Honeoye Falls and in Scottsville, where it takes a north-south alignment.

Communities

The western terminus of 251 is located at the center of Scottsville at an intersection with NY 383. The route then departs Scottsville to the south as River Road, crossing over Oatka Creek and continuing south to an intersection with Quaker Road just south of the village, where Route 251 turns east and begins its east-west alignment. Prior to entering North Rush, NY 251 passes over the Genesee River and the Livonia, Avon and Lakeville Railroad before becoming Rush-Scottsville Road. Roughly 2.5 miles to the east, 251 intersects NY 15 at a junction located just to the east of Interstate 390 exit 11. After another 1.25 miles, Route 251 intersects NY 15A, changing its name to Rush-Mendon Road in the process.

Between Routes 15A and 65, Route 251 parallels the path of the Genesee River to its north, curving slightly southeast to do so. Then, at Rochester Junction, NY 251 turns sharply to the northeast, intersecting Route 65 and curving north to an intersection with Mendon Center Road just south of Mendon Ponds Park near Mendon Center. Mendon Center Road then turns to the north-northeast, eventually intersecting NY 64 in Pittsford while NY 251 continues to the east on a pure east-west alignment.

In the town of Mendon, Route 251 intersects Route 64 in the town center. This intersection acts as a "control point" for both roads, as the road name is different in all four directions. Continuing east on NY 251, the name becomes Victor-Mendon Road before heading east out of Mendon and Monroe County.

[edit] Ontario County

In Victor, Route 251 continues on a perfect east-west line until an intersection with Phillips Road, where NY 251 turns to the southeast. At an intersection with Cork Road, NY 251 moves to the northeast, crossing the Ontario Central Railroad before reaching its eastern terminus at Route 96.

[edit] History

The portion of modern NY 251 from Mendon east to Victor was originally designated as part of NY 15 in 1924.[3] In the 1930 renumbering, NY 15 was rerouted to follow modern NY 96 between Victor and Pittsford while the former routing of the route from Victor to Mendon became NY 251.[4] NY 251 also extended westward along a previously unnumbered alignment to Scottsville.[2]

NY 251 was extended northwest to Gates by 1947, following modern NY 383 west and NY 386 north before terminating at NY 33.[5] The route was truncated back to Scottsville between 1978 and 1985.[6][7]
