[edit] Route description
New York State 231 is entirley a four-lane divided highway, and is a limited-access highway from NY 27A to north of NY 27. New York State originally intended to make Deer Park Avenue into a temporary section of NY 231, as it moved the route over to the formerly proposed Babylon-Northport Expressway. The unnumbered interchanges that do exist are listed as follows:
- New York State Route 27A: Montauk Highway.
- Suffolk CR 50: Union Boulevard/John Street.
- New York State Route 27: Sunrise Highway.

[edit] Babylon-Northport Expressway
The NY 231 designation was assigned in 1970 to the just-completed two-mile segment of the Babylon-Northport Expressway, as well as to Deer Park Avenue (which until then had been CR 35). The designation along Deer Park Avenue was only meant to be temporary, while the remainder of the Babylon-Northport Expressway was to have been NY 231 once it was completed. Like so many highways in the United States, it became a victim of rampant freeway revolts. Community opposition stalled and then killed the expressway extension proposal in the early 1980s.
North of Sunrise Highway, there was to be a "Y" interchange between the existing Deer Park Avenue Spur to the northwest, and the Babylon-Northport Expressway to the Northeast. Through North Babylon, the expressway was to be routed along Samparoams Creek (Babylon-Islip town border). There was to have been a cloverleaf interchange with the Southern State Parkway, however it would've been better served by the Deer Park Avenue Spur. Alternately, an interchange was planned at Suffolk CR 57 (Bay Shore Road). In Deer Park, the expressway was to veer northwest just south of Grand Boulevard. There may have been an interchange with Long Island Avenue near the intersection of Suffolk CR 4 (Commack Road). At Commack Road, the Expressway would have replaced the road near Edgewood State Hospital, using flanking service roads to connect the two sections. There was also the possibility of an extension of Suffolk CR 2 (Straight Path) at the northern end of this concurrency near Ostego Park.
Through Dix Hills, the Babylon-Northport Expressway was to be routed parallel to, and about one-half mile east of Carll's Straight Path. The cloverleaf Interchange with the Long Island Expressway was proposed to go over the Expressway itself, plus the service roads and the Parking Areas. Another potential interchange would've been with Carll's Straight Path and the Long Island Motor Parkway (Suffolk CR 67). This was another proposal to extend Suffolk County Road 2 northeast of the existing terminus at Deer Park Avenue, the current NY 231.
Continuing north along the Greenlawn-East Northport border, NY 231 was to be routed parallel to, and about one-half mile west of Suffolk CR 10(Elwood Road). It was to pass a dairy farm just west of the intersection of Little Plains Road and Suffolk CR 9 (Cuba Hill Road) passing over the former and under the latter. It would then cross Suffolk CR 11 (Pulaski Road) just west of Stony Hollow Road, There certainly would have been an interchange at this location, because the NYSDOT was also planning to build a North Shore Expressway that was intended to include a relocated New York State Route 25A. In East Northport and Northport, part of the right-of-way was going to consist of the former Northport Spur of the Long Island Rail Road. Some mistakenly believed that the railroad spur was being sacrificed for the planned highway, however the fact is that the industries that used this line no longer found it useful.
The last major interchange in Northport was to be installed at NY 25A (Fort Salonga Road) just west of Suffolk CR 10 (Elwood Road). Beyond NY 25A, there was a proposal to extend the road to a Long Island Sound crossing at nearby Asharoken to either Stamford, Connecticut, or Norwalk, Connecticut. Such an extension would have required interchanges and service roads connecting local roads between Asharoken and Eaton's Neck. Asharoken was also planned to be used as part of a proposed Parkway across the north shore of Nassau and Western Suffolk Counties called the Sound Shore Parkway.
Throughout the 1960s, the Babylon-Northport Expressway remained as an active proposal on state, county and town maps. During these years, the New York State Department of Public Works (NYSDPW) purchased rights-of-way as far north as NY 25A for the expressway. Opponents had the standard complaints that it would lead to suburban sprawl, bring property values down and destroy neighborhoods, businesses, and farms. Despite these accusations, the farms and businesses were sold to developers, and by the late-1980s, so was the right of way for the road, keeping traffic in western Suffolk County a nightmare.[2]
[edit] Deer Park Avenue Spurs
In addition to the southern Deer Park Avenue spur, a northern one was proposed between the current terminus at Suffolk CR 35 & 66 and ending north of NY 25.[3] With the cancellation of the Babylon-Northport Expressway, there was no motive for building the northern Deer Park Avenue Spur.
