[edit] Route description
NY 204 begins at Interstate 490 exit 6 in Gates. Between I-490 and NY 33A, NY 204 is a grade-separated, limited-access highway with no exits. This stretch is called the Airport Expressway, named for the facility that Route 204 passes shortly before reaching its eastern terminus at I-390. Upon reaching the end of the freeway at Route 33A, 204 turns east onto 33A, creating a 0.9 mile concurrency between the Airport Expressway and Brooks Avenue. At Brooks, NY 204 separates from NY 33A and turns to the southeast, following Brooks east to the Greater Rochester International Airport. Past the airport, NY 204 interchanges with Interstate 390 at exit 18 before reaching its eastern terminus at the Rochester city line a short distance afterward.
[edit] History
[edit] Airport Expressway
NY 204 was originally assigned to the Airport Expressway upon the completion of the section between I-490 and NY 33A in the mid-1960s.[2] The freeway was to have been extended to I-390 near the Airport,[3] but this plan was nixed due to opposition by area residents.[citation needed] Instead, the intersection with NY 33A, which was built with the mindset that NY 204 would be extended past NY 33A, was left as a stub half-interchange until 2001 when the junction was redone as a traditional T-shaped intersection.[4]
[edit] Brooks Avenue
The portion of Brooks Avenue from Howard Road to Genesee Park Boulevard in Rochester was originally designated as part of NY 47 in the 1930s.[5] When NY 47 was rerouted to follow Beahan Road and Scottsville Road between Howard Road and Elmwood Avenue c. 1962, the former alignment of NY 47 on Brooks Avenue and Genesee Park Boulevard was redesignated New York State Route 33B.[6][7] This designation was removed at some point between 1964 and 1970.[8][9] By 1977, Route 204 was extended eastward from the southern terminus of the Airport Expressway to its present eastern terminus near Interstate 390.[10]
