[edit] Route description
NY 137 enters New York state along High Ridge Road as a continuation of Connecticut Route 137 in the town of Pound Ridge. It continues north into the town center, about 2.5 miles from the state line, where it has junctions with New York State Route 172 and New York State Route 124. From Pound Ridge, NY 137 then heads west along Stone Hill Road, crossing into the town of Bedford. It ends at New York State Route 121 in Bedford.
[edit] History
NY 137 was first designated in the 1930 state highway renumbering as a continuation of the road leading north from Stamford, Connecticut.[2] The original route ran from the hamlet of Bedford at NY 22 (via modern NY 121) to the Connecticut line via the hamlet of Pound Ridge. In the 1980s, Route 137 was cut back from its previous terminus at Route 22 and Maple Avenue (referred to as "Cantitoe Corners").[citation needed]
An alternate route leading southeast from Pound Ridge to the Connecticut state line along Westchester Avenue was designated in the 1930s as NY 137A. At the time, the road continued across the state line as Connecticut Route 29. By 1947, Route 137A was renumbered to Route 394, which was again renumbered in 1966 as an extension of New York State Route 124. By 1990, Westchester Avenue was turned back to the town of Pound Ridge.
An expressway was planned along the NY-CT Route 137 corridor in the 1950s.[3]
