The New York State Democratic Committee was established in 1792 by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. It is reportedly the longest-enduring political party in the world.

The party's foundation was laid during dinner table conversations held in New York City between Jefferson, Madison, and other party members. Initially, the conversations were generally antidemocratic in nature, but ultimately the party would adopt full support for Republicanism. Jefferson once wrote: "I cannot describe the wonder and mortification with which the table conversations filled me. Politics were the chief topic, and a preference of kingly, over republican, government was evidently the favorite sentiment. An apostate I would not be, not yet be a hypocrite; and I found myself, for the most part, the only advocate on the republican side of the question."

The State Party is currently Co-Chaired by June O'Neill and Dave Pollak. The Executive Committee is Chaired by Reggie Lafayette. The 2006 state elections brought the party great success, with Democrats winning all statewide offices. The success mirrored that of the national Democratic Party, which took both houses of congress.
