New York Mosque
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The New York Mosque is the largest center of worship for practitioners of Islam in the New York City area. Located on Third Avenue between 96th and 97th Streets, it's known for its distinctive diagonal direction towards Mecca, and its modern style of architecture.
Money for construction was donated in 1966 by the governments of Libya, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, but it would take years of negotiations before the actual construction could begin.
Completed in 1990, the mosque officially opened September 25, 1991.
