New Urban High School (NUHS) is a public charter school located in Milwaukie, Oregon, United States.
NUHS was founded in 2003, financed by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The brainchild of teacher turned principal Tim King, New Urban was created as an alternative high school that places emphasis on technology-oriented, project-based flexible learning principles.
NUHS currently enrolls over 300 9-12th grade students from primarily the North Clackamas School District but accepts enrollment from local school districts as well.
[edit] Structure
New Urban High School outlines its 5 core beliefs about schools and education;
- We want all of our students to feel that they are known well by our staff and will have meaningful interactions with adults on a daily basis.
- Learning should be challenging, stimulating, and relevant to students' lives.
- Teachers know students' learning styles and provide varied teaching strategies to accommodate for the differences.
- All students can learn with the proper environment and motivation.
- School must be a safe place both physically and emotionally.
Students are grouped in teams or "houses", a practice designed to harbor strong student-teacher relationships and enable teachers to integrate the project-based learning philosophy more effectively. In line with the technology-based philosophy, New Urban houses a great deal of Windows-based computers of which students can expect to complete part of their curriculum on.
Students enrolled at NUHS are expected to complete the graduation requirements mandated by the North Clackamas School District, with a minimum of 26 credits and the Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM) obtained. Various programs are required to be completed at New Urban that do not exist at other schools, such as Youth Take Action (YTA), a community-service based program that entails at least 40 hours of service while teaching students career-related skills and how to become involved in their community.[1]
New Urban also offers several off-shoot programs, including the Clackamas Middle College, which allows students to take some college credits along with their regular high school curriculum, simultaneously facilitating a smoother transition into college, and the Clackamas Web Academy, where school is conducted almost entirely online.[2][3]
To obtain a diploma, students are required to complete a minimum 60-hour internship with a local business that reflects their career aspirations and complete accompanying course work.
