New Ulm High School is the largest of three high schools in New Ulm.
[edit] Events and Organizations
New Ulm High School's annual events include Homecoming Week, which always includes the "Battle of the Classes."[citation needed] Tradition has it that the Seniors always win this event.[citation needed] Another event is Snow Week, which includes "human dog" sled races.[citation needed] The school holds a prom in spring.
Some of the student organizations include: Speech, Knowledge Bowl, One Act, STABLE, SPOTS, Student Council, FFA, FCCLA, Payne Street Singers, Jazz Band, Choir, Mock Trial, Yearbook, and Band.
[edit] New Ulm High School Sports and Rivalry
New Ulm competes in the South Central Conference, which includes public high schools for the Blue Earth area, Fairmont, St. James, St.Peter and Waseca. Waseca has been perhaps the most interesting rivalry ever since a few Blue Jays toilet papered NUHS. That incident happened on the eve of Waseca's Homecoming game against New Ulm. The most recent addition to this list is Mankato West. The rivalry really kicked off in the semifinal round in the 2007 hockey season when a fight broke out on the ice after the game. The fighting spread to the fans out in the parking lot of the Mankato Civic Center.
[edit] Eagle Squadron and Hockey Fans
The New Ulm High School Eagle Squadron (started in the 2005-2006 school year)is the only all-student run organization at NUHS.[citation needed] They are a group of Seniors and sometimes Juniors who travel to every Girls Volley Ball game and cheer for them.[citation needed] They are known for often having more fans than the opposing side and can often be heard chanting things beyond what is happening in the game.[citation needed] Although the Eagle Squadron is not an actual NUHS organization. It is not recognized by the faculty.[citation needed]
There is also a great fan base that will travel to away hockey games. They are known for their cheers and great leadership this has declined since the 2005-2006 season because that group of seniors was not replaceable. The Captains for the hockey cheering team were Scott Schugel and Alec Schwartz. The core group of fans would pile 9+ people into a van and travel to every away game and was know to stand their ground against every teams cheering section.
[edit] NUHS Today
Due to recent budget cuts for school funding from the state, the New Ulm Middle School had to shut down and now shares space with the New Ulm High School.[1] There is some distaste from the student body about how little of a voice they have and in recent years the school board has gotten lots of heat about how they are spending money.[citation needed]
