New Paltz Central High School is situated in the rural town of New Paltz in upstate New York, on South Putt Corners Road. It educates students in grades 9-12 from the New Paltz Central School District, which covers much of the town.

The original structure was completed in 1978, at which time average class size was significantly smaller than in later decades. NPHS recently finished a major building project alleviating overcrowding problems.

The school mascot is the Huguenot, the band of French Calvinists who played a major part in settling New Paltz.

New Paltz High School is known for its academic success. The school has a variety of Advanced Placement courses that offer college credits. These classes are taken by students who want to challenge themselves in history, science, math, or literature/writing.

The school was recently rated 198 in Newsweek's top Public High Schools in the nation. This study calculated the amount of Advanced Placement courses taken by the students in the school and their success in taking them.

The school is also noted for having some of the best technology in the public school system in the state of New York.

The principal is Barbara Clinton and the vice-principal is Dennis DiBari.
