[edit] Awards and recognition

New Milford High School was the 86th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2006 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools.[1]

[edit] Athletics

The New Milford High School Knights compete in the Bergen County Scholastic League (BCSL) Olympic Conference, made up of private and public high schools located in Bergen County and Hudson County. The Knights have won multiple league championships in football, basketball, and wrestling, as well as soccer.

In 2004, the team won their first ever Group I State Championship in baseball.[2] The team won the North I, Group I sectional championship with a 16-1 win over Hasbrouck Heights High School,[3] and then won the State Championship with a 3-0 win over Becton Regional High School in the semifinals and a 2-0 win in the finals vs. New Providence High School.[4] Pitcher PJ Saporito was named 1st team all-league, all-county and all-state while compiling a 12-0 record and 0.53 ERA. He was also selected as the North Jersey Player of the Year.[5]

The team repeated as league and sectional champions in 2005 before losing to Whippany Park High School 3-2 in the State Championship semifinals. Several players were named to all-league, all-county, and all-state teams.

[edit] In the Spotlight

On June 23, 2007, 55 music students were selected to participate in the second episode of the reality show Schooled. The selected students were fooled into believing that their school's music department was below state standards, and that they would have to take rigorous tests in order to determine whether the department would be eliminated. Improvisational comedians drilled some students during an oral exam; all the students also had to learn Richard Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra in three hours, after which they had to perform the song for a panel of state-appointed judges. The students were surprised with a private concert by The All-American Rejects and were each given a backpack filled with OfficeMax merchandise. The chain also granted New Milford High School a $60,000 gift card. The one-hour show aired on August 5, 2007 on The CW Television Network. Subsequently, DVDs of the program, which included extended concert footage and bonus features of New Milford High School's students, were distributed by OfficeMax stores with a $50 purchase.[6]
