[edit] Route description
Route 48 begins at a traffic light with U.S. Route 130 and Salem County Route 675 in Penns Grove.[1] Route 48 heads eastward, intersecting with local roads before entering Carneys Point Township at .27 of a mile. Salem County Route 601 comes soon after, intersecting near Interstate 295. Route 295 interchanges just afterward. County Route 551 intersects at a traffic light in Carneys Point. Route 48 crosses over a creek before coming to an end at U.S. Route 40.[1]
[edit] History
Until the Delaware Memorial Bridge opened, there was a ferry which connected this route to Delaware Route 48.[2]
The Harding Highway was dedicated by President Warren G. Harding in 1921 on the steps of Woodstown High School in Woodstown. The route was designated Route 18S in 1923 and became Route 48 in the 1927 renumbering, but is now mainly U.S. Route 40. It ran from the Delaware River town of Penns Grove at a now-abandoned ferry dock to Atlantic City.
