Route 47 is a state highway in New Jersey, United States. It runs 75.19 miles from Atlantic Avenue in Wildwood to U.S. Route 130 in Brooklawn. It is also referred to as Delsea Drive, as at one time it was the main route connecting the Delaware River to the sea. This name was assigned by the New Jersey Legislature in 1933.

Traffic jams along Route 47 are commonplace in the summer vacation season and can stretch for miles due to the missing southern section of Route 55, where all Jersey Shore-bound traffic enters the small two-lane road. The speed limit along Route 47 reaches as high as 50 miles per hour.[2]

Prior to the 1953 renumbering, the Route 47 and Route 49 designations were switched south of Millville. Route 47 continued east along what is now Route 49 to a junction with Route 50 in Tuckahoe. What is now Route 47 was part of Route 49 north of Dennis, and Route S49 south of Dennis to its terminus.

[edit] Construction

In 2004, improvements were made to the intersection of State Route 47 and Chapel Heights Road in Washington Township.[3] The intersection had problems with ruts and potholes, which made stopping difficult. The $50,000 invested into the project involved pulling out and repaving the intersection. The job only took one day.

The Route 47 bridge over Dennis Creek in Dennis Township and the Routes 47/83 interchange received improvements in 2007.[4] The Route 47 bridge was structurally deficient and in need of replacing. The job was completed with wider shoulders and a wider sidewalk. The Route 47/83 intersection was realigned and had signals installed.

NJDOT commissioner Kris Kolluri announced on August 27, 2007 that a resurfacing project on Route 47 would occur.[5] The project will cost $1.9 million and stretch from north of Oak Road to south of Forest Grove Road in Vineland. The Department of Transportation will replace two inches of asphalt. The route is currently in bad condition as ruts, cracks and potholes have appeared on the road. Route 47's shoulders are also going to be repaved. The project is to be done by mid-November of 2007.
