[edit] Route description

[edit] Middlesex County

New Jersey Route 440 begins in Edison Township where Interstate 287 ends at the New Jersey Turnpike.[1] The first exit is for County Route 514 at mileposts .33 and .42. Route 440 enters Woodbridge Township at the underpass of King Georges Post Road. At 1.46 miles, Route 440 has an interchange with Crows Mill Road (CR 656) and Smith Street.[1] Route 440 then intersects with U.S. Route 9 south and crosses over County Route 612. At two miles, the Garden State Parkway southbound exits off to the right. The exit for Smith Street and U.S. Route 9 North. At 2.66 miles, Route 440 enters Perth Amboy and crosses under New Brunswick Avenue (CR 616), Florida Grove Road (CR 655) and Carlock Avenue.[1] The next interchange comes at 3.25 for County Route 501 and New Jersey Route 184. The next interchange is for New Jersey Route 35 and then Amboy Avenue after. At 4.26 miles, the final exit on the Middlesex County portion of NJ 440 leaves to the right for State Street (CR 611). Route 440 then crosses the Arthur Kill on the Outerbridge Crossing into Staten Island.[1]

[edit] Hudson County

Communities

At 18 miles, thirteen miles from the Outerbridge Crossing, New York State Route 440 enters New Jersey again, now in Hudson County.[1] Route 440 crosses some Hudson County routes and then County Route 501 again. Just short of 22 miles, the New Jersey Turnpike interchanges with Route 440. Soon after, New Jersey Route 185 passes over 440 in Jersey City. Interstate 78 crosses over at 22.6 miles. Nearing 23 miles, 440 interchanges with Avenue C. County Route 501 crosses again at 23 miles and then 440 goes under the Newark Bay Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike. The next exit is for West 63rd Street leaves to the right. Route 440 ends at an interchange with Hudson County Route 612 and U.S. Route 1-9 Truck.[1]

[edit] History

A section in Hudson County between the Bayonne Bridge and the west side of Jersey City was formerly Route 169, but was renamed Route 440 in 2001 to achieve continuity with the numbering of the New York State portion of the road on Staten Island. The original plan was to extend Route 440 along the west side of Bayonne, but local opposition killed the project. Much of the right-of-way for the proposed Route 440 in Bayonne is now being developed as parkland. Before the 1953 renumbering, the Middlesex County section was Route S4. The Hudson County section was once part of Route 1.

[edit] Future

Route 440 will be resurfaced southbound from just west of the Outerbridge Crossing to the New Jersey Turnpike. This section of freeway is currently concrete slabs and is showing signs of severe wear and stress. The plan is to repair needed concrete slabs and then resurface over the top of the entire highway providing a continued smooth surface.[2]

On January 8, 2008, Gov. Jon Corzine announced plans for new tolls on the Middlesex County portion of Route 440, in addition to increases on existing toll roads, in order to help raise funds to reduce New Jersey's outstanding debt.[3]
