Route 181 is a 7.47-mile (12.02 km) state highway in New Jersey, United States, running along an old alignment of Route 15 through Sparta. It begins in Jefferson Township at an interchange with Route 15, where that road changes from a divided surface road to a freeway. After entering Sparta Township, it passes Blue Heron Drive, which interchanges with Route 15 just east of Route 181, and then heads north through downtown Sparta, ending at Route 15 at the north end of its freeway.
[edit] Route description
Route 181 begins at an interchange with Route 15 in Jefferson Township.[1] Route 181 heads northward, intersecting with local roads and crossing over a stream. After a few more local roads, Route 181 crosses over a branch of Lake Hopatcong. Less than a mile later, Route 181 leaves Morris County and Jefferson Township for Sparta Township in Sussex County. Route 181 crosses over more streams, intersecting with local roads and becoming a divided highway for a short distance.[1]
After intersecting with some Sussex County roads, Route 181 intersects with County Route 517.[1] Route 181 comes to an end at a merge into Route 15 in Sparta.[1]
[edit] History
The road that is now Route 181 was taken over after 1941 as Route 6A, renumbered to Route 15 in the 1953 renumbering. The new Route 15 freeway opened in 1974, and the old alignment was designated Route 181.[2]
