[edit] Route description
Route 171 begins at the interchange with southbound U.S. Routes 130 and 1 in North Brunswick.[1] Route 171 interchanges with northbound US 1. Route 171 heads north, then east as it intersects local roads. Less than a mile in, Route 171 intersects with Middlesex County Routes 606 (Milltown Road) and 620 (Nassau Street). At 1.34 miles, Route 171 enters New Brunswick and intersects with more local roads as Georges Road. The name changes to Commercial Avenue as Route 171 continues eastward. Route 171 turns along Suydam Street and intersects with County Route 691. There it turns along Livingston Avenue and intersects with County Route 527.[1]

The two routes become concurrent for the rest of the distance along George Street in downtown New Brunswick.[1] Route 171 ends at an intersection with NJ 27 and CR 527 at 3.1 miles.[1]
[edit] History
The route that is now Route 171 was first given a number in 1934 as Route 25M as a spur of what was then Route 25 (current US 130).[2] In 1935, US 130 was extended north from Trenton along its current alignment and current Route 171, and the road was known as both Route 25M and U.S. Route 130. In the 1953 renumbering, the 25M designation was dropped to avoid the concurrency. In 1963, US 130 was truncated to its current terminus at US 1, and the current designation of Route 171 was applied.[2]
