Route 140 is a state highway in New Jersey, United States. It is a short east-west connector in Deepwater between U.S. Route 130 (Shell Rd) and both the New Jersey Turnpike and U.S. Route 40 (Wiley Rd) in Carneys Point near the Delaware Memorial Bridge. Because of its close proximity to these major arteries (as well as Interstate 295), there are numerous truck stops, motels, and diners along this highway, despite its short .96 miles (1.54 km) length. Also, the main entrance to the DuPont Chamber Works facility is located at the end on US Route 130.

[edit] Route description

Route 140 begins at US 130 in Deepwater. Known as Hawks Bridge Road, it proceeds southeast soon reaching an intersection with Interstate 295. It then intersects County Route 551 before turning southeast, and intersecting the New Jersey Turnpike. From here, it intersects Route 40 before reaching its end at CR 540 in Carneys Point.[1]

[edit] History

Route 140 was created in 1973 as a connector between U.S. Route 40 and U.S. Route 130.[2] The eastern two-thirds was state-maintained because of the Interstate 295 and the New Jersey Turnpike interchanges. In 1977, the western third was taken over by the state and the route was designated Route 140. Due to the ramp design, 140's eastern end is located at Route 40 east, but Route 40 west runs concurrent with 140 west for a short distance before looping onto the Turnpike south.[2]
