New Hyde Park Memorial Junior/Senior High School is a six-year public high school in New Hyde Park, New York, as part of the Sewanhaka Central High School District. It, like the four other high schools in its district, goes from grades 7 to 12, making it like a combined middle school and high school.
As of the 2005-06 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,696 students and 106.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 16.0.[1] In terms of racial ethnicity, 57% are White, 29% are Asian/Pacific Islander, 11% are Hispanic and 4% are Black. (2008) In a recent Study by the students the averages for racial ethnicity is,35% Caucasians, 35% Indian, 13% Asian, 14% Hispanic and 3% African American. The attendance rate of the school is 96%. The student per teacher ratio is 15:1. Concerning the educational levels of the teachers in the school, 16% have a Bachelor's degree, 82% have a Master's degree, and 3% have a Doctorate degree.
The school held its 50th Anniversary Celebration on Sunday, June 4, 2006. The principal is currently Mrs. Loretta S. Nugent, with assistant principals Mr. Michael DeMartino and Mrs. Maria Hecht. The school mascot is the Gladiator, and its colors are blue and white.

[edit] Awards and recognition
During the 1992-93 school year, New Hyde Park Memorial High School was recognized with the Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence by the United States Department of Education[2], the highest award an American school can receive.[3][4]
[edit] Curriculum
The school has classes in various areas of music, English, technology, business, math, science, social studies, and languages including French, Italian, and Spanish at various levels. New renovations added new lockers, and updated other facilities over the summer of 2006. The school also has various special education, and advanced education programs, including AP courses.
This school offers the following Advanced Placement classes: World History, US History, Government, Euro, Psychology, English Language and Comp, English Lit and Comp, Calculus AB, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Spanish, Italian, Studio Art. With an expanding student population, and a variety of AP courses available.
There are also various music programs including choral, orchestra, band programs on both junior and senior high levels. There is also a jazz band, string ensemble, and the Chamber Singers choral group.
[edit] Extracurricular activities
There are various clubs and sports in the school. Sports run from September to June and there are many options. The school is known for its girls Basketball team that won the Class B New York State Championship in the 2002/2003 season. Both the girls and boys soccer teams have extremely good records. The Girls Varsity Tennis Team was undefeated last year and won the Division.
During the 1993 season the Gladiators varsity football team went undefeated and won the Long Island championship.
During the 2002/2003 season, the varsity men's soccer team, under coach Vincent Scott, qualified for the playoffs. During the first round, the team was forced to miss their own homecoming for their opening round game against Bellmore/JFK, where they prevailed 1-0, but fell in the second round.
Clubs include: The School Musical, Drama Club, Model United Nations (which has had success at conferences such as Harvard, Yale, New York, Rutgers, Chicago, etc) Key Club, Builders Club, Red Cross, Samarateens, the school newspaper The Chariot, Contemporary Music Appreciation, Jazz Band, Mathletes, Math Research, Anime, Artisans, Airbrush, and Chess, among others.
Various Performing groups include those at pep rallies, sporting events, and homecoming. They consist of the Romanettes (kickline), The Twirlers, The Step Team, and JH, JV, and V Cheerleaders.
