The New Haven EP-5 was a double-ended rectifier electric locomotive built in 1955, by General Electric, for the New Haven Railroad. When New Haven merged with Penn Central, the eight surviving units were given a new designation as the GE E40, and were assigned to freight service. When Penn Central merged with Conrail, the remaining six E40s were stored until 1977, when all of them were retired. All examples of these locomotives were scrapped.
The EMD FL9 locomotives were designed to replace the EP5s.
