The New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (NGVR) was an Australian Militia unit of World War II. The NGVR was formed in September 1939 from white settlers in New Guinea and was effectively dissolved in late 1943 when its surviving members became part of the Australia New Guinea Administrative Unit (ANGAU). The NGVR was reformed as the Papua New Guinea Volunteer Rifles (PNGVR) on 17 March 1951 and was disbanded in 1973 shortly before Papua New Guinea's independence.[1]
