[edit] History
Initially known as Scribner High School, it opened in 1853 as the first high school in New Albany, Indiana. The school was operated on an irregular basis, and closed for years at a time. During part of the American Civil War, the school building was leased to the federal government, to be used as a hospital for Union soldiers. Continuous operation of a school has occurred since 1864 (though in varying locations). The final current location of the school was established in 1928.
Charles Allen Prosser attended and later ran the school as superintendent from 1900 to 1908, where he would form many of his opinions that would revolutionize teaching nationally in the decades to follow.
New Albany High School's theater department was featured in the New York Times for being "outstanding"[citation needed]. Director Barry Blaustein showed an interest in the theater program and is currently in the works of making a documentary about high school theater in southern Indiana. It will be released in Spring 2008. Also, New Albany's theater department was one of the first high schools in the nation to perform Disney's High School Musical.
