New-York Central College, McGrawville

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

New-York Central College, McGrawville was an institution of higher learning founded by anti-slavery Baptists in 1849 in McGraw, New York. The college was notable because it educated Blacks as well as Whites in a time of slavery and segregation. At least two of the school's faculty were Black as well. A smallpox epidemic struck McGrawville in 1860, and the effects of the outbreak coupled with lingering social and political opposition caused the college to close in 1860.
