[edit] Summary
The new ionizing radiation warning symbol (ISO 21482) from IAEA.[1] The IAEA PDF graphic was converted to SVG by Kricke. ISO’s legal adviser says it is copyrighted and, in reference to the use of this image in hazard symbol, radioactive decay and possibly other articles:
“ [W]e will not oppose to[sic] the use of the symbol as mentioned in your email as long as the following text is included next to the representation of the symbol:
"This symbol is included in ISO 21482:2007. ISO International Standards are protected by copyright and may be purchased from ISO or its members (please visit www.iso.org for more information). ISO has not reviewed the accuracy or veracity of this information."”
…Duly quoted. See Image talk:New radiation symbol ISO 21482.svg for the full exchange.
The IAEA cites the use of this symbol as: "The symbol is intended for IAEA Category 1, 2 and 3 sources defined as dangerous sources capable of death or serious injury, including food irradiators, teletherapy machines for cancer treatment and industrial radiography units. The symbol is to be placed on the device housing the source, as a warning not to dismantle the device or to get any closer. It will not be visible under normal use, only if someone attempts to disassemble the device. The symbol will not be located on building access doors, transportation packages or containers."

[edit] Fair use rationale for use in Hazard symbol
I (—xyzzyn) believe that the inclusion of this image in the article Hazard symbol is allowed under the fair use right of United States copyright law and complies with the Wikipedia:fair use policy, because
- the image is used in a critical and comparative context,
- the image cannot be replaced, being specified in ISO 21482 so that any potential replacement would be virtually identical to this image,
- the inclusion of the image does not infringe on the ability of the copyright holder to use the image commercially and
- the image adds significantly to the article, being a major example within the scope of its subject.
