Neve Sha'anan (Haifa)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neve Sha'anan (Hebrew: נווה שאנן‎) is a large neighborhood in Haifa, Israel. It extends from the lower inclines of Mount Carmel to midway across its slopes. The neighborhood is situated next to the celebrated Technion, and houses the Middle East's largest shopping mall, the "Grand Canyon" (a play on words, since "Kanyon" means mall in Hebrew).

The neighborhood is home to approximately 38,100 people as of 2004,[1] about 14% of the city's total population. It consists of the lower, poorer "Yad Labanim" and "Hanita" areas, and the middle-classed "HaTikhon" and "Asher". Neve Sha'anan is known for its many religiously observant residents, as well as the high number of immigrants from the former Soviet Union who live there. It is also a prime residence for students and faculty of the nearby Technion.

It was founded in 1922. Today it consists mainly of 3-4 story apartment buildings. The few remaining single-story houses are gradually being torn down and replaced with luxury 4-story apartment buildings.
