State Route 599 (Rancho Drive) is an 8.715 mile road that connects the northwest areas of Las Vegas, Nevada to the city's downtown areas.

[edit] Route description

SR 599 runs from State Route 589 (Sahara Avenue) northwest to U.S. 95 along former State Route 5. This route lost mileage between 1996 and 2000. This route is on the short list of routes to be decommissioned in its entirety and remanded to the city of Las Vegas. The designation of SR 599 is rarely used to refer to this road, as local Las Vegans instead use the name Rancho Drive.

Although many maps and U.S. 95 freeway signs designate the route as Business U.S. 95, such shields have not been posted along SR 599 for many years.

[edit] History

Historically, U.S. Route 95 followed what is now SR 599 from its junction with SR 579 (Bonanza Road) northwest to the state highway's terminus at U.S. 95 (at the Ann Road interchange). The U.S. route was relocated upon completion of the Oran K. Gragson Expressway.

SR 599 previously carried signs designating it the Tonopah Highway at major intersections. These signs had mostly disappeared by the early 1990s. This name generally does not appear on maps and is no longer in common use, except by long-time local residents.
