[edit] Lake George Tour Boat Sinking
I noticed that you made some editing on the Lake George Page. I was wondering if you thought it should be moved to it's own page. I was also wondering if you knew how to move something into the In The News section on the Wikipedia main page because the Lake George Tour Boat Sinking appears to have been never put into the In The News section. I am pretty new at Wikipedia so thank you in advance for helping me out. --steveheidt 14:39, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Deletion: Flying Spaghetti Monsterism
Hi Ben/Neutrality, Why did you delete Flying Spaghetti Monsterism? As far as I could see, it was a well constructed article, and verifiable if you have a browse around the web. Admittedly, it was about a fictional/dubious religion therefore the verifiability is also dubious. But could you have instead added a "The neutrality of this article is debated" template and let the Wikipedians do the clean-up? I would have a look into it for you?! zrenneh/Henry Hadlow 11:00, 5 October 2005 (UTC) (No user page yet!)
[edit] ArbCom elections
Hello, Neutrality/Archive 27. In case you haven't noticed, I'm writing a special series on the upcoming 2005 ArbCom elections for The Wikipedia Signpost. In the October 17 issue, we will be profiling the current ArbCom members. Note that this should not be a platform for re-election; rather, it should serve as an insight into what you feel about the ArbCom, and your opinions of it are. Thus, I hope you don't mind answering a few questions. Many thanks!
1. Are up for re-election this year?
2. If so, do you plan to run for re-election?
3. How do you feel about serving on the ArbCom?
4. What do you think are the strengths of the ArbCom?
5. Weaknesses?
6. If you could change anything, what would you change? Why?
7. Do you regret accepting your position? Why or why not?
8. If you could say one thing to the current ArbCom candidates, what would you say, and why?
9. Do you think your job is easy? Hard? Explain.
10. Looking in retrospective, is there anything you would have done differently?
11. Do you feel that the ArbCom is appreciated by the community? If not, how do you think that could be changed?
12. What is the most frustrating thing about being on the ArbCom? Enjoyable?
I hope you didn't mind me bombarding with you with questions; by no means feel obligated to answer all (or any) of them. Thanks for serving Wikipedia, and for taking your time to help a Signpost reporter! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk | WS 14:08, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

I am in a dispute over the inclusion of an offensive quote in Alternative theories regarding Hurricane Katrina (specifically, Fred Phelps' vulgar attack on homosexuals). I've promised the other party to this dispute that I would seek a third party opinion, and, well, you are Neutrality. Can you have a look at the paragraph in question, and advise as to whether its inclusion is appropriate, or if you have any alternative ideas as to how this material should be handled? Cheers! [edit] Wikipedia Bounty Board
Ben,
I've been thinking for a while about starting a Wikipedia:Bounty Board, where people put up monetary bounties for articles to become featured, but where the money all goes to the Wikimedia Foundation if the conditions are met. I have a draft at User:Quadell/bounty.
It seems to me that the positives would be that it would encourage donations and encourage the creation of featured articles, and it would fill a gap - that people tend to look for a psychological "reward" when they've worked hard for Wikipedia. But my questions are: 1, Do you think there are any legal problems with this? 2, Do you think this goes against the Wiki philosophy? And 3, Do you see any other problems? (I'm asking several long-term and knowlegeable Wikipedian about this.)
Thanks for your input, – Quadell (talk) 17:48, 24 October 2005 (UTC)
P.S. I hope you survive the bad weather in one piece!

[edit] Regarding User:Rex071404
You recused yourself from Rex's third Arbitration Case, [2] so I thought you would be the best person to ask about this. Seeing as I can't comprise your judicial judgement as you're already recused. Ever since Rex's latest ban, he's dug back into John Kerry. There he has recently violated the 3RR twice. [3] [4]. But for some reason, no Admin is willing to intervene. The first 3RR violation was completely ignored and it looks like the second one might go that way too.
Specifically I need to know if this ArbComm judgement: "7) In the event Rex071404 reverts any edit for any reason any administrator may impose a short ban (a hour to a day for first offenses and up to a week for repeat offenses)." [5] Is expired as Rex claims it is: [6]. Or whether that statute is still active and needs to be enforced. -- Mr. Tibbs 02:15, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Amir Peretz, English usage and style
You have replaced labour with labor. Consider the following excerpts from the Wikipedia:Manual of Style:
- "Each article should have uniform spelling and not a haphazard mix of different spellings, which can be jarring to the reader. For example, do not use center in one place and centre in another in the same article (except for comparison purposes).
- "If an article is predominantly written in one type of English, aim to conform to that type rather than provoking conflict by changing to another."
- "If all else fails, consider following the spelling style preferred by the first major contributor (that is, not a stub) to the article."
I recognize that "made aliyah" is customary usage in the US. Still it sounds awful, as do most Americanisms. Since you are interested in issues of style, I strongly recommend the following from The Economist Style Guide. RCSB 12:30, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] DYK
Hi, I just noticed that you hv removed a Malaysia-related entry from the DYK. While it may be true that there have been several articles abt Malaysians recently, the DYK policy is clear that no more than one entry per DYK should relate to a specific context in a single DYK column. So, even if there are five entries related to Malaysia on different days of the week, it is ok. The contributions in DYK depend on the current articles and if more current articles are related to Malaysia, so be it. As long as it adheres to DYK policy, I believe that an article should get exposure. btw, some one did mention on the talkpage of DYK tht there was a surfeit of Malaysia-related articles but there has been no consensus or discussion abt that. Similarly, there was a discussion abt too many DYKs on capital punishment in USA (which imo hands out far fewer capital punishments when compared to, say, the middle-east), but there has been no discussion on that as well and those entries do continue. Also, it has been a norm to have four entries in DYK. Hence, please consider reverting your change to the DYK as the entry qualifies to be a part of the DYK. Also, I am sure that we do not want people who create new articles to be de-motivated. And btw, I am not a Malaysian :) Regards, --Gurubrahma 05:53, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] complete failure of wikipedia NPOV policy
This article Talk:Palestinian_exodus is a complete failure of wikipedia NPOV policy. Nearly 3 years ago it was anti-Palestinian. Now not a shred of that POV remaind and it is completely biased to the other side. I have edited this article for a week, yet every single word i changed there got reverted by a coordinated revert gang which is able to circumvent in this way the 3RR rule. It seems that unless I am able to get a "gang" of my own:-) there is no point trying to get this article to be NPOV. slim and jayjg are involved yet they too do not make any contribution toward NPOV. This is not what Wikipedia is all about but it is what wikipedia has become.
I don't have the time or the organized manpower as the other side to go through the usual Wikipedia mechanism. These mechanisms have failed in this article. In 3 years not a single Wikipedia admin was able to make significant contribution to make this article NPOV. This is a symptom to other anti-Israel systematic bias that is spread all over wikipedia and I suggest you find a way to address it as I can't. Zeq 18:50, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

I'm contacting you because your help is needed and because you recently cast a vote on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Wikifiddler. [edit] Moise Movilă
I got most of the info from the Romanian page http://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moise_Movil%C4%83 , and have tried to filter it as much as I could (in there, it's very narrative and it uses very questionable adjectives). What is the problem you see? I'm willing to admit guilt, if it is the case.Dahn 06:10, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

- If it's that bribery thing, let me inform you that this was standard procedure. Wallachia and Moldavia were under strict Ottoman rule, there was no system of succession other than the higher authorities' preference, and all "candidates" resided in Istanbul, competing each other for the throne. I cannot cite precise sourdes of the time, since I don't have the texts in front of my eyes (and most have not been translated, and I could be considered biased for the translation I make of them ad-hoc). However, it is by no means a secret, nor was it a shameful thing. It was the procedure of the time, and either that or incorporation into the Ottoman Empire as provinces. In fact, the Turks had presents received as the only reason not to take over completely. The reference I added, although it deals in a few sentences with Moise, is a good analysis of this process. I'd appreciate it if you don't switch back the article. Thank you.Dahn 06:27, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Mangere Inlet "unsourced"
With due respect, if you see a place often enough, and drive round it often enough, you know what its like without sourcing the information. If looking at a place through your own eyes is "original research', so be it, but this "unsourced" article is 100% accurate. Grutness...wha? 06:41, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
- Then you'd better do the same with the 80% of other items on wikipedia with no sources - most of which, no doubt, are sourced in the usual way - by looking. The only external source necessary for this is everyone who lives in South Auckland, any of whom will confirm it. I can understand external sources being needed for biographical or historical articles, but a simple list of details about a geographical entity which any of a couple of hundred wikipedian editors would be able to confirm without having to refer to any reference materials? Completely unnecessary. Grutness...wha? 06:47, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
- I jog. I wear a pedometer. I know the length. Grutness...wha? 06:52, 10 December 2005 (UTC)
Well, you're just going to have to put this on AFD, then. And I suggest you do the same to all the other unsourced articles on Wikipedia. I've seen over 500 of them today alone, so this could be a load of fun. Grutness...wha? 07:03, 10 December 2005 (UTC)- Sigh. Look, I know verifiability is important, as are sources, but look at it this way. This article links to several other articles, which are either unsourced themselves or - in several cases - provide plenty of sources which give the sort of information that would verify this article. It seems unnecessary to add the same links to this article that those link to. As to the information actually within this article, all of it is the sort which could be verified simply by looking at an Auckland road map. Grutness...wha? 07:22, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Bessarabian Bulgarians references
Dear Ben, you've tagged the article Bessarabian Bulgarians as not citing sources or references. The article is based on a translation from bg:Бесарабски българи, where bibliography is cited. The problem is, two of the books are in Bulgarian and the one in Russian, so I was wondering how to provide the bibliography here on the English Wikipedia, or is it at all appropriate to mention books in a foreign language?
I was thinking of something like:
---
- Grek, Ivan and Nikolay Chervenkov. Българите в Украйна и Молдова. Минало и настояще (Balgarite v Ukrayna i Moldova. Minalo i nastoyashte), Sofia, 1993
- Navakov, Saveliy Z. Социально-экономическое развитие болгарских и гагаузких сел Южной Бесарабии (1857-1918) (Socialno-ekonomicheskoe razvitie bolgarskikh i gagauzkikh sel Yuzhnoy Besarabii (1857-1918)), Chişinău, 2004
- Rodolyubets Almanach, volumes 1 — 6, (Sofia, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004)

The original version (in Cyrillic):
---

[edit] Prostitution in the People's Republic of China
Thanks for your corrections to Prostitution in the People's Republic of China. I just have an issue with the changes of spelling to American English. Is there a rule about using American English? My understanding of Wikipedia convention is that if an article is predominantly written in one type of English, the aim is to conform to that type rather than provoking conflict by changing to another. So I've reverted back to Australian English. Yeu Ninje 21:17, 10 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Categories
Good rewrite of Engineers for a Sustainable World.
I've been giving some thought to categories in this area and would appreciate your input. I notice you removed my categorization for the above article (I put it inCategory:Appropriate technology for developing countries - Organizations). This seems fair enough, going by their website. So I've put it into Category:Development charities instead, and edited the text for Category:Appropriate technology for developing countries - Organizations.
It will often be hard to determine which of these two categories to put an organization into, but now there are links going each way so it will be less of a problem.
--Singkong2005 03:04, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Another question
Is it overdoing it if I make a category called Category:Appropriate technology for developing countries - People? At present, someone such as Amy Smith appears in Category:Appropriate technology for developing countries, but it's not really... appropriate.
I will post my questions also at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals) --Singkong2005 03:49, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Birthplace and Birthdate
I noticed you changed the where the birthplace was mentioned in the Scott Pellerin article and I changed it back to the way it was before. I realize that it is a standard to not include the birthplace with the birthdate in biography articles, but according to the standards set in the WikiProject Ice Hockey it is necessary to put the birthplace with the birthdate in hockey bios. [edit] Charles Sumner
Thanks for your good work re-writing Charles Sumner. The 1911 EB did not subscribe to NPOV, and our article was almost entirely taken from that source. Much better now. Cheers, -Willmcw 22:20, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Mangere inlet map
Hi - here it is. I was going to make a location map of it anyway, but this does the job well.
Sorry about the other day... another editor had severely raised my stress levels over at stub-sorting and I thought working on some NZ geography articles might calm me down a bit. Unfortunately it didn't! Grutness...wha? 05:09, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
- Neutrality: you can get equivalent satellite images with geographical features labelled from NASA World Wind, which can be freely used on Wikipedia. Like Google Earth, it's unfortunately only available for Windows. The hardware requirements may be a little higher than for Google Earth.-gadfium 07:24, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
Hi again - I've made a template map for Auckland and have started using it on some articles about the city. Have a look at the map on the Mangere Inlet article now. Grutness...wha? 09:30, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Zen-master and IRC agreements
Hey Ben, I'm not sure what agreements you reached with Zen-master the last time he violated 3RR at Conspiracy theory, and subsquently unblocked him, but you might want to take a look at this: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/3RR#User:Zen-master. Jayjg (talk) 06:01, 12 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Changes to Seignethaler article
Sorry to have reverted your changes, but you may want to review the style guidelines for using quotation marks. Cheers. Kaldari 00:31, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
I don't want to rehash all the justifications about why Wikipedia uses the "British" style exclusively, but it basically boils down to the fact that the "American" style is archaic (as it is based on the limitations of letterblock and typewriter typography). In fact, the terms "American" and "British" here are misleading. The change to the newer "logical quoting" style (as it is also called) has been occuring worldwide as more people use computers to write rather than typewriters. Americans have just been slower to adopt this change, as usual (cough! metric system. cough!). It has, however, become increasingly popular in America in the past decade, especially on the web. Even the Chicago Manual of Style remarks that "The British style is strongly advocated by some American language experts." The rest of the world already uses the "British" style exclusively and it would be more accurate to call it the "global" style. On most issues of grammar and usage, the Maual of Style makes allowances for regional differences, but in the case of quotation marks we opt for the newer style exclusively, as it befits an online encyclopedia to use modern conventions except where they would cause undue confusion for readers (i.e. imperial vs. metric measurements). In this case, I believe the original use of the logical quoting style was appropriate. Kaldari 21:46, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
Would you object if I changed the article back to logical quotation style as it was originally? Kaldari 22:47, 13 December 2005 (UTC)
From American and British English differences: "The American style was established for typographical reasons, having to do with the aesthetics of commas and quotation marks in typeset text.... However, many people find the usage counterintuitive. Hart's Rules and the Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors call the British style "new" or "logical" quoting; it is similar to the use of quotation marks in many other languages (including Spanish, French, Italian, Catalan, Dutch, and German). This "logical" style is increasingly popular in America, although formal writing generally calls for the "American" style. In fact, the British style is often the de facto standard among Americans for whom formal or professional writing is not a part of their daily life.... This rule of placing all punctuation inside quotation if and only if it belongs to the quotation is expressly prescribed by some American professional organisations such as the American Chemical Society. According to the Jargon File, American hackers have switched to using "logical" British quotation system, because including extraneous punctuation in a quotation can sometimes change the fundamental meaning of the quotation.... The American rule was used worldwide up to around the Second World War, after which the more logical style of presenting quotation marks took hold everywhere except America."
Basically, the "American" style is an anachronism from the days of typewriters (similar to the old convention of putting two spaces between sentences, which is also no longer needed thanks to kerning). Although it is true that most American style guides (though not all) still recommend the "American" usage, Wikipedia has adopted logical quoting as the preferred quoting style for all articles, regardless of topic or region of interest. It would be more appropriate for you to suggest a change to the style guide, if you feel such a change is warranted, rather than changing individual articles in a way that conflicts with it. [edit] Number of Non-Jewish holocaust victims at Holocaust denial
Hi Neutrality,
You suggested at Holocaust denial that the number of non-Jewish victims of the Holocaust was 7 million but I don't think this is accurate. Simon Wiesenthal put the number at five million and even that was controversial. I have no idea what the real number is but I think we need to stick to a more vague wording (millions) at Holocaust denial because you can't accuse someone of denying something that legitimate historians disagree over. [edit] To Esperanza elections staff:
Thanks for helping out! Could I ask a favor from you all? Would you mind checking Wikipedia:Esperanza/December 2005 elections/Vote and confirming that every candidate was listed on the member's list before December 12 and fulfill all the membership requirements (150 edits, 2 weeks)? Also, would one of you mind formatting and playing around with the tally box - I'm having some difficulty making it format correctly and listing all the candidates in the two races. Thanks a lot for your help! Flcelloguy (A note?) 16:35, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Someone to watch out for
I see that you had warned User:Massrepublican for NPOV problems. Well today, he's been adding interest group ratings to all Democratic members of Congress from Massachusettes, without any discussion whatsoever. I left another warning on his talk page. Just a heads up. --Woohookitty(cat scratches) 18:02, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Ancient Rome
Some questions regarding your recent edits to Ancient Rome:
- Do you have a rationale for uncapitalizing "Ancient" in the term (going so far as to move Culture of Ancient Rome to Culture of ancient Rome; though probably it should simply be named Roman culture eventually, since most other pages of a similar nature are in that style)? I don't oppose the change, but I've seen both "ancient Rome" and "Ancient Rome" used in books before (just like "Ancient Greece", "Ancient Egypt", etc.—in fact, check out History of Ancient Egypt, etc.!), so I was wondering what your logic is in case anyone tries to revert it in the future. I'd been thinking about working to make the page titles and usage more consistent myself (I went back and forth a few times with my edits), but I couldn't find any source for which of the two possible titles was preferable, so I held off on that.
- Your change to the "see2" template (renaming "Timeline of ancient Rome" to "timeline of ancient Rome" in the link) is incorrect: "See also" and "Further information" and "Main page" links subscribe to the same rules as Disambiguation notices (which is why they're both italicized, etc.), meaning that the page article should not be hidden, but should be represented exactly as the page itself is (except in cases where the title is unusually wrong somehow, i.e. iPod): no hiding parentheses, no uncapitalizing the initial word, etc. The link is discussing the article itself (and its page name), not the subject matter the article deals with; it's explicitly self-referential.
- You changed one link of "753 BC" to "753 BCE" in an image caption. This is blatantly unacceptable: you did not change the format of any other link on the entire page, causing an inconsistency where none existed before. Furthermore, I can think of at least a half-dozen fantastic reasons why "753 BC" is vastly preferable to "753 BCE", and since Wikipedia doesn't forbid using "BC" and says to use the page style that already exists on a given page in such cases, this particular edit surprises me in how flawed it is. Am I missing something here?
Anyway, thanks for your edits and help on the page; it shouldn't be too difficult to resolve those three edits and figure out the best course of action. -Silence 13:06, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] You are apparently a "LOSE CANON". The mind boggles.
You may be interested in my recent entry at BJAODN.
Or, y'know, you may not. But I figured I'd mention it all the same.

[edit] Request for Arbitration Point of Order

[edit] World Citizen userbox, {{User:1ne/Userboxes/User world}}
Hi, I noticed the message saying you're a World Citizen, I would like to invite you to add {{User:1ne/Userboxes/User world}} to your user page if you wish to proclaim it in a more effective way, and this template will also add you automatically to the Wikipedians with World Citizenship category. :) --Mistress Selina Kyle 00:05, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Turtle racing
I noticed you deleted turtle racing, and understand it may have been mistaken as spamm, but I was going to give it a stub, and add further information. I just find it helpful to have a version in "play" to edit on. In truth turtle racing is a sport, you can google for it if you like. Thanks, Chooserr 02:40, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Comments before editing?
I noticed you reverted my change without addressing my points in talk... this isn't the first time a sysop has decided to ignore the talk page and just unilaterally make changes or revert changes and it is quite frustrating... -- Jbamb 03:06, 19 December 2005 (UTC)
