[edit] RFC
Thx for your support on the RFC page. I'm new to RFC, but I assume this is nothing for me to get worried over. Goodnight. — マイケル ₪ 04:23, Dec 29, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Random stuff
- Do you know why the patrol feature has not been added after the upgrade MediaWiki 1.4?
- Why do you think Image:Cid Statue Burgos SpainImage is fair use? Anyone could take that picture so it doesn't qualify as unique historical value. A photograph :) of el cid riding would be different.
- I'm not sure that your policy in the box above is correct. You, or the person you stole this from, wrote "The odds of being archived are inversely proportional to the amount you annoy me". That means that (more annoyance) = (less archive odds). Is that what you mean? I would think that you meant it the other way around. BrokenSegue 00:52, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] MediaWiki:Sharedupload
The new version of this doesn't seem very clear to me. Specifically it doesn't make it very clear how to get the the corresponding image page on commons (there is a link on the word file which isn't exactly an obvious place to have it). Since it is protected normal users including myself cannot edit or revert it directly. Was there any discussion on its contents. If so where and if not where is the correct place to discuss such things? Plugwash 00:14, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
-
- I fixed it. Neutralitytalk
Ok its much clearer now but it now contains "Please see its the image description page on the Commons." which is extremely bad grammer. I suggest removing the word the from that sentence to give Please see its image description page on the Commons.. Cheers Plugwash 02:53, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Planetary nebulae
Hi, just noticed that the planetary nebulae bit on the front page says that they 'play a crucial role in the chemical formation of the galaxy' - looks like you changed the text from the original evolution of the galaxy to formation of the galaxy. Planetary nebulae play no role in galaxy formation, they only start appearing several billion years after galaxies have formed - evolution of the galaxy is the correct phrase here. Would you mind changing it back? Thanks - Worldtraveller 10:59, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
[edit] See WP:AN
Netoholic is upset you reverted his additions to Wikipedia:Proposal to expand WP:CSD more than 3 times in 24 hours. By its wording the 3RR applies to pages, not just articles ... which doesn't sound sensible to me. Could you please go and comment? Thanks :-) - David Gerard 17:36, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Battle Map Question
This battle map was made by brian0918 and is a map of where various civil war battles took place. We were both wondering if it is possible to do images maps on wikipedia (ie: make it so individual counties on the map are links to the battles that happened with in that county). I figured if you didn’t know the answer to the question you would undoubtedly know someone who did. Thanks a lot 578 19:11, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I just saw I had a new message and perhaps it was you that asked me where I got an image? The image was created by myself if you were wondering. If this message makes no sense to you, then please ignore it. Thanks.
[edit] Salt Lake City, Utah edit
Hi there. I saw your recent edit on Salt Lake City, Utah that changed an image caption from stating that the Salt Lake Temple is Salt Lake City's top tourist draw to a weaker statement that it's one of Salt Lake City's top tourist draw [sic]. Since you provided no edit summary explanation, can you explain why you felt the statement had to be weakened? There's really no question that the temple is indeed Salt Lake's top tourist draw, so I see no reason to equivocate about it. I don't mean to make this out to be a big deal, but I thought I'd bring it up with you instead of doing a heavy-handed revert. Alanyst 07:26, 1 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] COPIED FROM User talk:Raul654:
[edit] Malicious edits by admins to the Main Page
Since you started locking the featured article template on the main page, Neutrality has started reversing the quoting style from logical to conventional, in breach of the Manual of Style. I used to watch for such malicious edits and reverse them, but I cannot do so any longer. Do you have any suggestions about how to solve this problem? Any attempts to reason with the user himself are either ignored or deleted. —Wereon 17:53, Jan 2, 2005 (UTC)
- So that's why all main page featured articles suddenly get written up into American English and all the AD/BCs converted to CE/BCEs! So much for Neutrality on an International encyclopaedia! jguk 18:04, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Quite frankly this is nonsense. I've changed the grammar (quoting style) on the Johnny Cash article to American English because Johnny Cash is American. Likewise, I've left only the perfectly proper British English on the House of lords blurb. This bogus complaint stems from the strange British English fixation of a few users. Neutralitytalk 19:04, Jan 2, 2005 (UTC)
-
- Ben, I find it very difficult to assume good faith in you when your next edits after denying you are going round converting the Main Page articles into American English is to go and do just that to the one scheduled for 4 January. I don't really know what my point is other than to say I find it bloody annoying, and to ask you to refrain from doing it in the future. jguk 20:56, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Call for AMA election
AMA Member Advocate,
There's a poll currently in the AMA Homepage about making a new AMA Coordinator election. Please, cast your vote there (though it's not mandatory). Any comments you have about this, write it on the AMA Homepage talk page. Cheers, --Neigel von Teighen 18:43, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- My understanding is that now you are an Arbitrator, you should stand down from the AMA (see "Rules of the Association") jguk 19:48, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)
-
- A mistake while sending this to all AMA members...I don't know, maybe we should create an Inactive members list in the AMA for such cases. --Neigel von Teighen 19:59, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Simple enough, I've taken the liberty of just removing you from the AMA member list. Of course, if you have a strong sentimental attachment to the AMA and really do want to vote in its election, I suppose you could resign from the Arbitration Committee... (kidding, of course). --Michael Snow 23:18, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Noting you status on the AMA Member's Statement Pages
I am also noting your changed status on the AMA Member statement pages, but not removing the information there, as hopefully once you complete your term at the Arbcomm you will share your expertise by reinstating yourself as an AMA member. Good luck. — © Alex756 21:14, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Just saying Hi
Hi there (is this what being bold means?). I'm a newbie, and I'm just checking you out, since I saw your name a few times on the John Kerry talk page yesterday. Apparently you missed me on the Welcoming committee, since no-one appears to have said hello to me yet... I've been around a few days, mostly editing Doctor Who articles.
Just a thought - don't you think listing all previous attempts to vandalise your User page might be seen by some as an invitation or a challenge to try harder. Or was that the effect you were aiming for? PaulHammond 15:21, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks for welcoming me -- I'm enjoying using the Wiki, and your links were helpful. Secretcurse 23:37, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] afu rfar
Hi Ben — you say Abstain until evidence page is provided, see the example above; unfortunately, I do not see such an example. Am I supposed to open an evidence page, even before the request has been accepted? Also, I suppose I would be forced to accept mediation now that I stuck my neck out and filed the rfar, but note that I am convinced that this would be a waste of time, as there have been many attempts to mediate between afu and "everybody else", without moving him one inch towards 'seeing both sides': criticism, even in polite and patient form, have only served to reinforce his conviction to be the victim of a conspiracy of 'vandals'. So my rationale for filing this is, afu will still see himself as a victim, no matter what happens, but if he is scolded by the 'highest instance' on WP, he will hopefully seek for another forum better suited to his approach (note that he thinks the collection of diffs of his edits in the rfc is "illegal", "spying", "KGB method", in violation of the GFDL, and theft of his intellectual property). dab (ᛏ) 09:22, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Copyright
Hi. On you have put "The two-dimensional work of art depicted in this image is in the public domain in the United States and in those countries with a copyright term of life of the author plus 100 years or less." Does this mean that works before then that claim to be copyright can actually be used on wiki? --Hierarchypedia 16:21, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Trung Dung
-Concerning putting Trung Dung on deletion, I wished you would have evaluate your decision, how did you come to the conclusion that he is a Non-notable?
He is Notable because his personal and professional story has been profiled in many leading publications including Forbes, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal and San Francisco Chronicle, as well as in Dan Rather's book "The American Dream".
-*Software Billionaire, Immigrant Lives American Dream by Miami Herald
-Would you re-evaluate your decision?--Bnguyen 17:44, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Your userpage

[edit] Charles Darwin arbitration request
I'm sorry you voted against accepting the arbitration request and I apologize for not having followed procedures exactly. I am unfamiliar with them, mainly because I am not in the habit of getting this worked up over something.
I have now created a page from the template, following your suggestion. Also, I'd like to point out that the edit war has been going on for over a month and that we are no closer to a resolution, despite mediation and advocacy. Cheers Vincent 05:45, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Cantus, sockpuppets and blocking generally
Ben, may I ask why you have (together with Danny) banned Cantus for six months. Have I missed something in the recent ArbCom decision?
I note that you have turned the userpages of Cantus' sockpuppets into redirects to Cantus. Whilst this seems perfectly reasonable to me, I'm just wondering if it's general practice. For example, should User:172's revert of User:Cantus' edit of User:Wik itself be reverted?
Also I notice that you are taking an active role in blocking users following ArbCom decisions. I thought the practice was that Arbitrators do not enforce their own decisions, but it seems advisable to follow this practice anyway as it protects Arbitrators as requiring other admins to enforce them shows that the ArbCom decision is accepted by the community and also means that Arbitrators avoid the hassle that comes from complaints from users who have been blocked. And having Arbitrators kept above the fray is probably in your interests more than it is in anyone else's. Kind regards, jguk 20:02, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you for your prompt response. You may find it interesting to mosey around the Wikipedia:Missing Wikipedians page. On the history and talk pages are confirmations from Fred Bauder and Raul that Gzornenplatz is indeed a reincarnation of Wik. My guess is that Jimbo knows this too. I remember seeing a bit on his talk page where he referred to Gzornenplatz as lying to him. I might, of course, be wrong, but I interpreted that as a reference to his being Wik. I thought from Jimbo's tone that he was hoping for stronger sanctions against Gzornenplatz in the recent ArbCom case against him, but prefers to let the ArbCom have its head rather than to actively intervene. Of course, this is just my interpretation on Jimbo's words - you'd have to ask him for proper clarification.
- Although Cantus has been in recent trouble with the ArbCom and it was important for a quick remedy against him yesterday, a six month ban seems too harsh. My take is that he only just found out that his recent adversary (Gzornenplatz) was also his old adversary (Wik) and just plain over-reacted. That's immature, bad and against community spirit - and it is only right that he was stopped. But after a short cooling off period of a few days, and provided, say, that he is willing to give an undertaking not to repeat that behaviour - it may be best to let him back. Not to say that if he is too pissed off, he may over-react by getting one of those floating IPs that can't be blocked and coming back and vandalising. (Which is one reason why I think it's better to encourage users to modify their behaviour rather than serving them with long bans.) Kind regards, jguk 22:09, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)
[edit] vandalism on the main no table page?
i noticed you had said that you had some problems with imposters? since you seem to have lots of contributions and no reason to vandalize i wanted to point out that the last edit, seemingly performed by yourself or an impostor (only 2 minutes after the previous edit), for Main_Page_(table_free) has nazi insignia and a penis in the "in the news" section. i don't think i have reversion powers to change it back to the previous clean version, so i thought i would let you know about it before asking someone else with reversion powers in case it is the work of an impostor. it's been that way since november unless someone also hacked the last update info.

[edit] PD-old
Hi. I was wondering about your retagging Image:AfricanSlavesTransport.jpg from PD to PD-old. While I think you're most likely correct (as I suspect that image was not original to the 1890 book), I am reluctant to use "PD-old" unless I know the death date -- for example if William Rednbacher was still alive for at least 16 years after the book I scanned that from was published, that tag would seem to me to be obviously wrong. I was wondering what criteria you used to tag that -- do you have a death date for Rednbacher, know something about the original engraving, or what? I'm eagar for feedback in clarifying best use of tags for old images I scan, thanks for any input. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 08:06, 13 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- Unless I hear an explanation, I'm going to change the tag back in a couple of days, as it seemed to me more accurate before. -- Infrogmation 04:34, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] country infoboxes
Hi, there's a new Solution E that's been proposed for the country infoboxes; I've changed my vote from the Solution D that I proposed, earlier. The new option, proposed by User:Zocky, transcludes a subpage instead of using the template mechanism for this.
See: Nepal's infobox is implemented at Nepal/infobox using Template:Infobox_Country; Tuvalu's is implemented at Tuvalu/infobox as a wiki table.

[edit] Johannesburg
Sorry, I'm going to the talk page before this turns into a revert war. Can you explain to me why you change the layout of the page? it now looks terrible, as all the images are sitting on top of each other, and in South Africa, we use British spellings for things which you removed. There has been no other objections to the layout or the spelling, and I would like to know why you changed so that we don't start reverting each other. Páll 06:19, 18 Jan 2005 (UTC)
