Neurotically Yours

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neurotically Yours is a flash cartoon series created by iLL WiLL PreSS (the online pseudonym of Jonathan Ian Mathers, and the name of his online company) about a squirrel named Foamy. The cartoons are mainly located on the iLL WiLL PreSS website, in addition to external websites such as Newgrounds and Friends of Foamy fansite.

A new episode of Neurotically Yours is posted approximately every two weeks on Thursdays. To date, there are over 130 official episodes of Neurotically Yours. There are also a number of fan-produced episodes circulated among various fansites on the Internet, along with 4 DVDs which contain unreleased cartoons and test animations.

[edit] History

One review has described the comic as being a mix of "Tim Burton, Ren Höek (of Ren & Stimpy), Jhonen Vasquez, early Simpsons and a heaping dose of misanthropy."[1]

The cartoon was originally hosted on "www.4yrecords.com". It was later taken down and everything moved to the iLL WiLL PreSS website. The original strips are no longer available, except for the very few early "Foamy's rants" from the 4y Records Archive[2]

The first cartoon on the Internet was "Distractions," followed by "Pen of Doom", uploaded to Newgrounds in December 2002.[3] It was followed by "Squirrel Pulpy Fiction Thingy," (a controversial and very violent game; its title appears to take on the high levels of violence in Quentin Tarantino films) in January 2003.[4] These two have been later removed, with the explanation on Squirrel Pulpy Fiction Thingy that "I got bored with it and I'm sure it's warped enough minds ^_^."

The only one of these "un-numbered originals" that remains on the popular site is a short based on a skit from the comic, named "The Joyful Suicides Of Reese Witherly," which has been on Newgrounds since March 2004.[5]

Other "un-numbered originals" are at the Friends of Foamy fansite, "Maid of Horror" (2003). "Innuendo Stare Down" (dating also from 2003) is a clip of Germaine with a lollipop. These originals are characterized by poor animation and audio quality in comparison with later episodes.

An official episode was summited on 9 June 2004 then "blammed" on 5 April 2006 from Newgrounds called 'Rules For The Masses'.[6]

There is also the unofficial 'iLLegal Immigrant Special', which was submitted to Newgrounds on 29 March and was "blammed" on 2 April.[7]

[edit] Voice Acting

  • All male characters are voiced by Jonathan Ian Mathers.
  • All female characters are voiced by Dawn Bennett.

[edit] Recurring Segments

  • Foamy Fan Mail- An episode where Foamy (and once Pilz-E and Germaine) answer Fan Mails. The emails Foamy usually get are asking the cartoon to show stuff like Foamy getting a girlfriend. In response, Foamy insults the writer and ends the email with "Signed, Your Lord and Master, Foamy!" In Foamy Fan Mail IV, Foamy had gotten so sick of the emails, he burned the set to the ground so he wouldn't have to answer any more. This proved to be ineffective as he had to do another one even when his room is in ashes. He gained a new set the next episode.
  • Squirrel Songs- In these episodes, Foamy (vocals) and Germaine (Guitar) are on a park bench trying to raise money for Foamy's Cult by singing musical rants. However, despite best efforts, the songs get no audience and Foamy becomes angrier about each time.
  • Tech Support- Foamy clashes over the phone with the Smell Tech Support sole employee who, thanks to outsourcing, is an Indian man named Mammed Udi. Foamy receives little help from Udi and has to fix his broken computer himself. In the latest one Udi goes off on Foamy and America with a rant of his own, in the end though, Foamy replies "at least they're more polite than what we get here. Bastards!"
  • Topical Rant- Topical Rants are rants from Foamy that "couldn't be animated," with Foamy in still frame talking about a specific topic.

Mathers has released merchandise that can be bought on his website, as well as the specialty store, Hot Topic and online store CafePress. These include:

Since their first pressings, each of the DVDs has been redesigned to include a "Play All" feature rather than force the viewer to select each episode individually. The different versions can be recognized by their DVD covers; the cover art on iLL WiLL PreSS's store depicts the revised editions. The Neurotically Yours audio CDs are available for purchase on iTunes at the same price as their packaged counterparts.

The iLL WiLL PreSS store also sells a series of audio CDs with acoustic music by Mathers; these are unrelated to Neurotically Yours, although one album contains demo versions of songs from Foamy Live at GBCB's.

[edit] Characters

These are the characters you may see, some more than others, in an episode:

  • Foamy- Foamy is the main character of Neurotically Yours. Foamy is a lovable little critter who loves bagels. He also enjoys harassing his friend Germaine and is the head of Foamy's Card Cult.
  • Germaine- Germaine is Foamy's main human friend and "owner". She thinks that no one appreciates her or her creativity.
  • Pilz-E- Pilz-E is Foamy's highly medicated friend.
  • Mammed Udi- Mammed Udi is an Indian man who is the Smell-tech supports sole employee. He's only had a few cameo roles.
  • Begley- He has an English accent, once met with the Queen of England, and has a purple Mohawk.
  • Franklin- Franklin is a cashier for Starshmuck's Coffee (a parody of Starbucks). He lives and breathes the will of the almighty Starschmucks Corporation.
  • The Hatta- His real name is Leroy and was found in a dumpster in the back of a Reddish Lobster Restaurant.
  • Anchovie- This character is seen in episodes #17, 41, and 67. The only thing known for sure about Anchovie is that he is obsessed with Germaine.

[edit] Foamy Card Cult

The Foamy Card Cult was created by Foamy in the episode with the same name. The cult consists of cards that can be found on iLLWiLLPreSS. There are instructions on how to obtain and transfer the card to others. The only purpose given for this cult is "Meet people, scare strangers, warp the masses... 'cause you know you wanna."[9]
