[edit] Town arrangement

In 1959, construction began of the "residential town in the green", Gravenbruch. Nearly 7.000 people were housed in this satellite town in the forest between the "Main town" and Heusenstamm, to the east. At one time, so many families had moved there that the district had been the town in Europe with the most children.[citation needed] Gravenbruch is known for the Kempinsky-Hotel and the drive-in movie cinema.

In the local government reform in 1977, Neu-Isenburg absorbed the neighbouring town of Zeppelinheim and extended westwards. In Zeppelinheim there is the Zeppelinmuseum.

[edit] History

Neu-Isenburg was founded on 24th July 1699 by Count Johann Philipp of Isenburg as a refuge for 30 Huguenots fleeing France. It was called Philippsdorf, for the first 75 years of its existence. In 1816 the village became part of Hesse and in 1894 it received city rights.

In 1899, at its 200th anniversary, it was granted a coat of arms. The right part of the arms has the red-silver bars of Hesse, the left part in the second quarter shows the arms of the Counts of Isenburg and in the fourth quarter shows the arms of the Counts of Münzenberg-Falkenstein, the successors of the original Counts of Isenburg.

The layout of the village was planned by Andreas Loeber. There is a square with four diagonal streets from the corners and four streets between them, all radiating from the square, so that there are eight triangles of the same size. At first, the settlers of Neu-Isenburg were farmers, but after a short time they reverted to the trades that they had had in France. Local villages in the Neu-Isenburg area were critical to the immigrants. The new town became known as "welsches Dorf".

On 20 May 1700, Pastor Isaac Bermond held the first worship under an old oak. In 1701, Frankfurt had a forester's house (today it is the restaurant "Frankfurter Haus") built at the city boundary between Frankfurt and Neu-Isenburg. From 1702 to 1706 the first french-reformated church were built of wood. The laying of the foundation stone was on Ascension Day 1702. Also in 1702 the first city hall was built and in this year there were also the first mention of the "Haus zum Löwen", which where use as an tavern by the name Au Lion d'Or (Zum goldenen Löwen/To the golden lion) until 1918. Today it is the museum for local history. In 1704 the first school was following and in 1705 the "Bansamühle". The church made out of wood was changed to one made of stone between the years 1773 and 1775. In 1781 the first germanspeaking school was built.

After the Congress of Vienna in 1815 the county Yseburg with the district authority Offenbach associated with Neu-Isenburg becomes a part of the of the Grand Duchy of Hesse. In 1828 the Prussian-Hesse tariff union build an toll house (today: Frankfurter Straße 10) close to the Free City of Frankfurt.

In face of big exceptions the first german families move to Neu-Isenburg in 18th century, so it happens that the worships in the church alternate between french and german. The french people in Neu-Isenburg do not like this was happening. In 1829 German becomes the offical language in Neu-Isenburg.

In 1846 the "Main-Neckar-railway" near Neu-Isenburg was completed, but it takes a couple more years until 1852 when Neu-Isenburg gets it own railwaystation.
