Hi there:

mind informing you that these circles were a fiction and never materialised, as this decree by the Habsburgian Austrian Holy German emporer led to the formation of the league of Schmakalden and the Reformation, because the Northern dukes, electors and kings never eve accepted the decree by Maximillian. This would have meant an infringement of their autonomy and more important a lost of their territory.

Maximillian's decree to form the so-called Reichskreise was thus a catalyser for the reformation as the Northern rulers fearing the loss of their territories joined the Protestant cause. Maximillian also tried to force the Swiss into the Reichskreise, but had to concede the quasi independence of the Swiss confederation after he lost the Battle of Dornach. Goslar was one of the first cities becoming Protestant driving out the Jesuites and catholic Imperial civil servants. This was accomplished by 1530 so that the Diet of Augsburg conceded that Goslar was Protestant territory.

Lower Saxony did not exist since the idea came up in 1923 again and the Nazis had the idea to use the Reichskreise for their evil plans, again. So if some Emporer in Vienna had the idea to push through the Reichskreise in Worms in 1495, in order to strip the Northern rulers of their territories but he millitarily and politically did not succeed (I mean Hilter also made some scary plans and luckily did not succeed) then this was an historical non-starter, as the catholic Emporers lost their war in 1648 the latest, and by then no-one remembered the establishment of the Reichskreise. The Guelphs, Oldenburgians, Swedes, Danes and Brandenburgians and multitude of dukes ruled in what is now Northern Germany, and the Austrian Holy Roman emporer could decree whatever he wanted, he was an "Emporer without clothes". But check out the City Halls of Munster and Osnabrueck, respectively, and what do they say in the treaty of Westphalia about the Reichskreise: Nothing! So history is a science has to be based upon facts on the ground (i.e. what actually happened in those days in Goslar) and Goslar was legislatively, juridically and politically Schmakaldic, i.e. belonged to the staunch opponents of the Austrian Holy German emporer and his idea of Reichskreise.

So what does this say: the Reichskreise never existed, since the territories of the kings, electors and dukes did not correspond to the actual Reichskreise, but rather they crisscrossed any of these boundaries. Next the towns of Hamburg, Bremen etc were not Imperial cities, but ahnseatic cities, which is not the same, because these cities were beyond the reaches of the emporer. It would be healthy to wikipedia, if there were some historically sound SCIENTIFIC contributions to this dictionary.

Why do you remove this category from the states of Germany? If I had to choose one category for these articles in which they clearly belong, this one is it. Kusma (討論) 11:17, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Hello Kusma, these articles have their own category which is a subcategory of States of Germany. For example Hamburg -> Category:Hamburg -> Category:States of Germany. So I remove the double (redundant) entries. OK? -- Netnet @ 11:22, 19 February 2007 (UTC)
They are not redundant. Our category system is not hierarchical, and the States of Germany category is useless for navigation of the articles if it doesn't contain the articles about the states of Germany, only the categories related to the states of Germany. If we think your suggestion to the end, we should remove all categories besides Category:Hamburg from Hamburg and categorize Category:Hamburg instead. That would be "correct" from a hierarchical point of view, but not very useful since categories and articles show up in different places in the category listings. Do you really think it is more useful not to have the states of Germany in the category about the states of Germany, but another click away, hidden in subcategories? OK then, after considering Wikipedia:Categorization and subcategories I've to concede that things are very less structured here than in de:Wikipedia. Compare to de:Kategorie:Bundesland (Deutschland). Excuse my rash editing. -- Netnet @ 12:25, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

No problem - I am painfully aware of how messy and unorganized (perhaps even broken) our category system is. The system of separating categories of articles and categories of categories like in dewiki probably makes more sense, but I have no idea how to apply this in an even remotely consistent way. There are too many different interpretations used how category membership should be defined and what they should be used for so the categories do not give Wikipedia any kind of well-defined structure. [edit] Cat sorts and umlauts

I'm not familiar with how category sorting works, so I want to ask whether whatever it is that requires umlaut-u to be rendered as a plain-u applies also to other umlauted letters. I notice that a similar template as that for Wolfenbüttel exists (existed?) for Würzburg and a few other districts with umlauts, as well. Also, can't the category sorting be fixed to allow for umlauts or ae, oe, ue as replacements? (Now I see what's up; please ignore previous question.Jim_Lockhart 05:10, 13 March 2007 (UTC))

One other question: I noticed that you changed the styling of District of [anywhere] by downcasing it; is this because of a Wikipedia convention I'm perhaps unaware of? I ask because writing, e.g., District of Wolfenbüttel for Landkries Wolfenbüttel is analogous to Burlington County for my home county; in other words, District and County are capitalized as part of the name (though this would be more obvious if Landkreise were rendered, e.g. Wolfenbüttel District, Celle District, etc., rather than District of [anyplace]). This is the first issue of WikiProject Germany's newsletter. The newsletter is intended to help all members of the project to keep up with new developments and coordinate new collaborative efforts.
Other areas where you can help
  • Assessment requests: Some open Requests for assessment need to be answered. To see new assessment requests as they come in, you can watchlist the assessment page.
  • More task forces and subprojects: As this WikiProject covers a very large topic area, it is helpful to add more task forces that focus on specific aspects of Germany. Currently, we have a Mainz task force, a Munich subproject and some joint task forces with other WikiProjects. Any project member is invited to start a new task force. Suggestions for possible topics:
    • Transportation in Germany
    • German politics (the political system of Germany and the biographies of its politicians)
    • German Democratic Republic

Be creative! If you have an idea, just suggest it on the project talk page (don't forget to watchlist it).

  • Categorization: Uncategorized Germany stubs need to be categorized
Project news
  • Criteria for B-Class status: The assessment criteria for B-Class have been changed. {{WikiProject Germany}} template now has 5 switches, B-Class-1 through B-Class-5 that correspond to 5 easily checked criteria that an article should meet to be assessed as B-Class. The advantage of this system is that now there is a clear boundary between Start-Class and B-Class articles. Authors of articles that were assessed as Start-Class now get more direct feedback what they should improve to attain a B-Class rating.

All of our B-Class, Start-Class and Stub-Class articles now need to be checked whether they meet any of the B-Class criteria. This is a major effort, and we need your help! If you want to help, but don't know how, please post at the project talkpage.

  • Cities and municipalities task force

A task force dedicated to creating and improving articles on all German cities and municipalities has been started and is looking for help.
