[edit] Description

Netherley belongs to the Liverpool Garston political constituency. It is a predominantly residential area with little industry except for local retailers, with some homes being council houses and some being privately owned.

[edit] Crime

The area has a relatively high crime rate (both petty and serious) and high unemployment.[citation needed] Netherley was featured in the news in 2001 when a family feud of two 'White Mafia' Liverpool families escalated into a gun war with tit-for-tat killings and arson to property owned by the two families. Among other areas of Liverpool Netherley is well known for having a high amount of shed robberies which results in little or no arrests.

[edit] Retail

The area lost a major local employer, HPL Jars & Containers, in 2006. After thirty plus years, it was bought out by M&H Plastics and production was transferred out of the area.[2] The only retail in Netherley at the moment are some shops locacated at Latitude 53o 23' 19.8 and Longitude 2o 50' 29.3. There are 5 units in order from left to right: General store, Hairdressers, Chip shop, Bargin booze and a Post office.

[edit] Future developments

Netherley has a golf driving range, and in the near future will have its own top of the range sports facility to be built on the former Lee Manor High School site (formerly Netherley Comprehensive). It is also home to the Valley Community Theatre. The sports facility will contain a gym and sports areas to play football. Tom Marshall has confirmed that two fishing lakes are to be built on feilds located in Netherley. Tom marshall said "It's great news that this step has been taken. I have been working with the developers for some time now and I can't wait for us to have this fantastic new facility for local people" the acclaimed youth theatre in Netherley was named as the 9th best youth theatre in the UK. Netherley strives to rid itself of the stigmatism of being a crime ridden area and through local pride and focus it is successfully doing so.

[edit] Education

Netherley is home to St. Gregory's Catholic Primary School, which received a good Ofsted report in 2005.[3] The school was built at the same time as the local housing, and has adapted over the years to meet the demands of the area. The current Headteacher, who served as a Class Teacher in the early days of the school, is Mrs. Melia. The schools website is http://www.stgregoryscatholicprimaryschool.com/
