Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study

The Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) in Wassenaar, the Netherlands is an independent research institute. The Institute's objective is to foster advanced research in the entire field of the humanities and social and behavioural sciences, and to stimulate scholarly interaction in an interdisciplinary and international setting

The institute was founded in November 1970 as a result of consultations between the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW), the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and representatives of the Dutch universities. Since September 2002 Wim Blockmans has been Rector of the Institute. The institute is a member of the Some Institutes for Advanced Study.

The Fellows have arrived since October 1971. Some of these fellows were: David E. Apter, Gerrit Broekstra, Arif Dirlik, Lewis Goldberg, Bernd Heine, Fred Inglis, Bruce Kapferer, Ronald Kaplan, Frits van Oostrom, Bruce Russett, Henk Wesseling, Robert S. Wistrich, Nasr Abu Zayd, and Gerard de Zeeuw.
