Nesamony Memorial Christian College was an institution of Arts and Science in Marthandam, the second busiest town of the district of Kanyakumari. The College was run by Kanyakumari Diocese of the Church of South India. And now it was one among the two Colleges of the district, with South Travancore Hindu College to be accredited by NAAC as a 5 Star institution.

In the year 1868 Rev. James Emlyn from New Castle, UK, an L.M.S. missionary bought lands where the college is located now. Rev. Robert Sinclair, who succeeded Rev. Emlyn in the year 1910, built a bungalow and started a Boarding School on the Campus measuring 24 acres.
After Independence the long felt need for a college at Marthandam resulted in the starting of the Christian College in June 1964 by the Diocese. The Executive Committee of the Diocese, which met on 04-01-1964, entrusted the responsibility of raising funds for the buildings needed to an adhoc committee consisting of Messrs. N. Dennis (Convener), G.A. Ambrose, J. Nesamony, P.S. Wilson and Rev. M. Amos. The Diocese set apart sufficient extent of wet land as endowment to satisfy the University requirement.
With the Permission of the Madras University the Pre-University course was started in 1964 with 171 students. The College was inaugurated on 6th August 1964 by the then Bishop Rt. Rev. I.R.H. Gnanadason. In June 1965, the college upgraded to degree level with Mathematics, History and Economics as major subjects. From the academic year 1966’ 67, the college was affiliated to the Madurai University.
In the year 1991 the college was affiliated to the newly started Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli. The College became a Post Graduate institution in the year 1980-81. A Ph. D Research centre in History was added in the year 1997 in the regular scheme. The college offers 14 U.G. , 12 P.G. , and MBA, MCA, M.Phill., B.Ed & Ph. D. courses. The College at present has a student strength of more or less 10000. At present 550 teaching and 285 non-teaching staff are working in the institution as staff Members.
In NAAC peer team assessed the College on 8th and 9th April 2003. The college is accredited with B+ Grade at it’s executive meeting on 29th April 2003.
[edit] The Patron
The Patron of the Institution is Marshal A. Nesamony. He was born on 12-06-1895 at Nesarpuram in Vilavancode Taluk, Kanyakumari District. He was graduated in Trivandrum Maharaja College, Thiruvananthapuram, and studied law at Law College, Thiruvananthapuram. He started his Legal Profession in 1921. He was one among the important personalities who paved a significant role in the struggle for merging South Travancore(Kanyakumari) to Tamil Nadu.

[edit] The Administration
This institution is owned and managed by the Kanyakumari Diocese of the Church of South India. The Executive committee of the Diocese appoints the Principal of the College. The College Governing Board, constituted by the Diocese, makes all other appointments subject to the approval of the Executive Committee. The Major Financial and administrative policies of the College are formulated by the Governing Board. The general administration of the College vests in the Principal. He is assisted by the Vice-Principal in the day-to-day administration of the College. In the absence of the Principal, the Vice-Principal or the authorized Professor in the station shall be in charge of the routine affairs of the College. The Principal shall be responsible for supervising the maintenance of the accounts and properties of the College in accordance with the rules stipulated by the University , the Government and the Management.
The Heads of Departments will be responsible to the Principal for the organisation, co-ordination and smooth running of their Departments.
[edit] Nomenclature
In June 1984, the college was renamed as Nesamony Memorial Christian College in recognition of the yeoman service rendered by the late Thiru. A. Nesamony to the Kanyakumari Diocese.
[edit] The Emblem
The Emblem of the College bears a Cross, a Church, a Palmyrah tree, a Star, a Book and a Lotus flower. The Cross shows that it was a Christian Institution. The Church signifies sanctification, as one gets sanctification through prayers. The Palmyrah tree is a special feature of the district. Every part of its is useful in our daily life. At the top is a star which stands for guidance. The open Book and the Lotus, India’s National flower, symbolize Knowledge and Wisdom respectively, which were impart of the students on the campus. The motto of the institution is “ Faith, Endeavour and Power.
