Nerang State High School (NSHS) is a state school located Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. The school was founded in 1986 and now enrolls a total of 880 students.[1]

[edit] English
Students in all years, must select English or English Communication as a subject to ensure a complete understanding of the English language in a range of areas. English is a major international language and the purpose of this subject is to allow students the ability to contribute to communities. The English department, also supports a range of extra-curriculum events, such as debating and public speaking.[2]
[edit] Mathematics
Students must select a Mathematics course in all years of their education. In Year Eight, students are accessed on their ability and then in Year Nine, are placed in a level according to their rankings, this also happens through to Year Ten. However, in Year Eleven and Twelve, students are to decide on four mathematics subjects, Prevocational Maths, Maths A, Maths B and an optional Maths C course which requires the student to select Maths B to participate in. The Science course requirements are quite similar to the Mathematics course selections, as in Year Eight and Nine students are required to participate in the subject. However in Year Ten, a student is only required to select one of the four Science-based courses available, Biology, Chemistry, Multi-strand Science and Physics. Though in Years Eleven and Twelve all Science-based subjects are optional. [4]
[edit] Social Science (or SOSE)
The Social Science course requirements are the same as that of the Science course. In Year Eight and Nine students are required to participate in the Social Science subject. Though in Year Ten, four Social Science-based subjects are available and are optional, Ancient History, Modern History, Tourism and Study of Society. In Years Eleven and Twelve the Social Science course is optional and the above four courses are required along with a new subject, Marine Studies.[5]
[edit] Information Technology
The Information Technology course includes a range of subjects including, Technology, Information Communications Technology and Information Processing Technology. In Year Eight students are required to participate in Technology, where they learn basic computer ergonomics and touch typing skills. In Year Nine, students are able to select Information Communications Technology, to learn further computing skills, including software skills. Then in Year Ten, both Information Communications Technology and Information Processing Technology are available, in Information Communications Technology, students complete numerous amounts of competency tasks in order for them to receive a Certificate I in Information Technology. In Information Processing Technology, students learn basic programming techniques and virus information. In Years Eleven and Twelve, the same course as in Year Ten is available offering a Certificate II in Information Technology in Information Communications Technology and a highly-academic Information Processing Technology course.[6]
[edit] Visual Arts
In Years Eight and Nine, Art is available to all students. Though in Years Ten through Twelve, the course is optional, and four subjects are available, Board Art, Design, Multi Arts and Studio Arts. In Board Art, a more academic strand of Art, students learn about artist techniques in a written format, where as in Studio Art, the syllabus includes learning the basics of art in a visual manner. In Design, students learn to manipulate images using Apple Macintosh computers to produce outstanding artwork, including clothing designs and CD and DVD covers. Multi-Arts is a photography based course where students learn to take more visually attractive photographs.[7]
[edit] Health & Physical Education
The Health & Physical Education is offered in Year Eight and Nine and students participate in a range of recreational activities. Though in Year Ten through Eight two Health & Physical Education-based subjects are available, Physical Education and Physical Recreation. Physical Education is a more academic, and includes written based work. Whereas Physical Recreation, is a more physical subject.[8]
[edit] Home Economics
The Home Economics department, offers a range of subjects. Students in Year Eight, are required to participate in Home Economics as a wide-based subject. Whereas in Year Nine, students expand on their knowledge of the subject, in an optional course. In Year Ten through Twelve, the course is divided into three subjects, Home Economics, Hospitality and Catering. The subject is responsible for a large number of fundraising events, for the Parents & Citizens Association and other organisations.[9]

The Manual Arts department, offers a range of subject, ranging from Graphics to Industrial Practices and Furnishing courses. In Year Eight a wide-based subject of Manual Arts is required, where students learn a range of information relating to all aspects of the course. Where in Year Nine, it is an optional course and a student can choose whether to participate in either Graphics or General Shop. Though in Years Ten through Twelve, students are able to continue there learning of Computer Aided Design (or CAD) in Graphics or expand there practical understanding of the course in General Shop.[10]

[edit] School Hall
The School Hall is the location for all major events, conventions and large-scaled meetings in the school. The hall has recently undergone construction on its floor, placing a large Basketball court. The hall also provides a large speaker system where songs, including the "Australian National Anthem" is played on Full School Assemblies, seats are provided for students and staff on these days. The hall is also used for musical and sporting events.

The library consists of many hundreds or even thousands of information books, that can be accessed by students to further knowledge or be used as research for assessment pieces. It also features many computer systems that offer access to the Internet, as another method of research.

The school also features a gym, where students are able to exercise on a various number of machines. Many weight machines are located in the gym, which can develop muscle. Also a boxing bag is located just outside the gym for other activity training.

[edit] Joel Turner and the Modern Day Poets
In 2005, Joel Turner and the Modern Day Poets appeared at the school, to perform a range of songs including "Respect", "Funk U Up" and many beatboxing tracks. After paid entry to the event, students received a copy of 2x Platinum single, These Kids which peaked at number one on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart[11]. The band also autographed copies of their single.
[edit] Take 21
On August 10, 2007, Take 21 appeared at the School Hall playing many popular songs, including "Nothing is Real". The event was very successful and many students and staff alike, enjoyed the event. The event was a free event, which gathered a larger audience, than other events and was praised for its large capacity.
Take 21, was formed in 2005 when the members where students of St Paul's School and is a Brisbane-based band, that fall under the Indie Rock / Pop Punk genre. The band includes Chris Bancroft (Guitar/ Vocals), Michael Holmes (Vocals/ Guitar), Andrew Sax (drums) and Jordan Bergman (Bass/Vocals). There discography includes a new single “Be Warned” recorded at Blackbox Studios and an EP, "Nothing Is Real" mastered at Sterling Studios, Los Angeles.[12]
[edit] Disco Inferno
On April 30, May 1, and May 2 2008 the students of Nerang State High School produced a community musical based in the 1970's labeled 'Disco Inferno'. The musical was a great success with months of practicing and preparation, not only did the students play rolls in the musical but also staff members such as the principal, Lynne Bell. The musicals are only hosted every second year with thought of 'High School Musical' in 2010.
