[edit] General Rules for Card Magic

These general guidelines for card magic are not true in all situations; use your own judgement regarding them.

  • "Don't reveal what the trick is before performing it."

If you tell the audience the trick before you perform it, say that you are going to make a card rise from the deck, they will be looking out for you to attach an invisible thread to the cards and so on, and it will be more difficult to do the trick.

Magicians can use this to their advantage by falsely telling the audience, for example, that they are going to make a card rise; instead the magician makes the pack of cards change color -- since the audience was looking for a thread rather than for the magician switchng the deck, the trick is more likely to be a success.

  • "Don't repeat the same trick twice for the same audience."
