Nepenthes reinwardtiana (pronounced /nəˈpɛnθiːz ˈraɪnwɔːrdtiːˌɑːnə/ or /ˈriːɪnwɔːrdtiːˌɑːnə/, after Caspar Georg Carl Reinwardt), or Reinwardt's Pitcher-Plant,[1] is a Nepenthes species found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra. N. reinwardtiana has an unusually wide altitudinal distribution of 0-2100 m, being both a "lowland" and "highland" plant. There are many different colour forms, ranging from green to dark red. This species is famous for the two "eye spots" on the inside surface of its pitchers.

[edit] Taxonomy
N. reinwardtiana is most closely related to N. naquiyuddinii, from which it differs in several aspects of pitcher and leaf morphology. However, some authors believe N. naquiyuddinii is too similar to N. reinwardtiana to merit species status.[2]
Morphological character | N. naquiyuddinii | N. reinwardtiana |
---|---|---|
Two spots on inner cavity wall below peristome of upper and lower pitchers | Absent | Present |
Shape of upper pitchers | Upper ⅓ region tubular and lower ⅔ region infundibulate | Infundibulate in upper and lower portions, tubular in the middle portion |
Shape of lower pitchers | Tubular upper ⅓ and ventricose lower ⅔ portion | Infundibulate in upper and lower portions, tubular in the middle portion |
Leaves | Sessile to petiolate | Sessile |
Leaf apex of lower stem | Apical and subpeltate | Apical only |
Inner peristome margin | Toothed | Entire |
Peristome rib | Distinct | Inconspicuous |
In 2001, Charles Clarke performed a cladistic analysis of the Nepenthes species of Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia using 70 morphological characteristics of each taxon. The following is a portion of the resultant cladogram, showing part of "Clade 6". The sister pair of N. angasanensis and N. mikei has 79% support.[3] N. naquiyuddinii was not included in this analysis.
