[edit] Manga content in character articles

I'm glad to see this article getting off the ground. Here's the first question regarding content, and it may be a doozy. Currently, there's a lot of material in each of the main character articles about their portrayals in the manga vs. in the anime. Should that material be left in each character's article or moved here and condensed some? Willbyr (talk | contribs) 03:40, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

If the differences seemed to add up to any sort of coherent aesthetic or plot difference, I'd say merge'em here; but AFAIK, they don't add up to anything substantial (so far), so I think summary style should rule here: the differences in Asuka's introduction and coma are important to the Asuka article, the differences in Kaworu's activities and feelings are important to the Kaworu article, etc. --Gwern (contribs) 03:54 17 April 2007 (GMT)
While I agree that we should not simply just rehash the anime article, the article needs to be formatted to be "stand alone" rather than simply a list of differences. Even if it's left in summary or overview (with appropriate) links it will be better than simply having a whole bunch of "trivia" style points. Stextc 22:51, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] 11 volumes?

Has the 11th volume been released in Japan yet? Willbyr (talk | contribs) 14:59, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Don't think so. Some people on Eva-ML were saying something about the latest stage being delayed. --Gwern (contribs) 17:36 7 May 2007 (GMT)
*sigh* Greeeat...go figure. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 18:52, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

The 11th volume has been released as I have read it already. (John Ryan)

I checked Kadokawa's site and they're advertising vol. 11, but I couldn't find any reference to the manga on Viz's website. Has any word been released on when the translation is going to hit stores in the US? Willbyr (talk | contribs) 14:14, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

Does anyone know about how much time there is between the release of the collected volumes in Japan and in the USA? Willbyr (talk | contribs) 03:16, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Varies. I suspect the last few volumes will be on the order of a month or two, but for the early ones, the lag would be years. The bibliography has the English releases, and a few Japanese release dates are mentioned so... --Gwern (contribs) 12:56 21 June 2007 (GMT)

Amazon now has a release date of November 11 for volume 11...'bout damn time. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 19:27, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wait...

I thought NGE was one of the few animes to be made before the manga was. Is this true or false? --Whsitchy 03:38, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

That is TRUE —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kiloalpha (talkcontribs)
Going by the release dates, it's not. The manga was released in Japan in late '94, while the anime made its debut in '95. Willbyr (talk | contribs) 12:34, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Plot summary

I notice the Spanish wiki (a link to which was recently added) has a relatively detailed breakdown of every stage and thus every volume. Think a similar scheme would work here? --Gwern (contribs) 12:39 28 June 2007 (GMT)

I agree. Simply having "differences" is not an article. The manga is standalone to the series and should be treated the same way. 203.25.243.2 05:03, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] F-bombs in English dub?

Was "fuck" used at all in the dub of the anime? I've only watched the entire series subtitled, and I don't remember it being used in the few episodes that I've watched dubbed (which would've been censored anyway since they were on Adult Swim). Willbyr (talk | contribs) 03:25, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

This article is on the manga, not the anime... ask123 03:52, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Nudity

Alright, so how subtle are the differences between the nudity in the Japanese and English version? The only thing that I know of that hasn't been depicted are the female character's genitals... Willbyr (talk | contribs) 12:14, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Themes section

At some point I suppose we need a theme section on how the manga diverges. Here's some quotes (from the cite for the 17 million sales figure) for when we write it:

The story goes on, mercilessly depicting how Shinji and his fellow Evangelion pilots, all 14-year-old boys and girls, come to be physically and mentally torn to tatters through fierce combat with Angels. Clues to the unraveling of various mysteries, such as why the Second Impact happened, what Evangelions and Angels really are, and what the Instrumentality Project is, are scattered through the plot.
The world of Evangelion is filled with pessimism and lacks any trace of hope, apparently reflecting the public mood in Japan shortly after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake on Jan. 17 and the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway on March 20, both in 1995.
There is a common misconception that the anime series was based on the manga, but Sadamoto has applied his personal interpretation to the anime script and the characters to make the manga series easier for even teenage readers to understand.
You may not be a teenager any longer, but you may still want to understand the extremely complicated plot of the most-talked-about and--many critics say--the best anime and manga series Japan has ever produced, a series that has strongly affected the nation's otaku culture since the late 1990s.

[edit] This is not Shonen

It's not Shonen AT ALL, plz change it. Thank you in advanced Setokira (talk) 19:12, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

So what do you think it is? Seinen? And do you have a cite?
Given that it's published in "Shonen Ace" and there are more Google hits for "neon genesis evangelion manga shonen -wiki" than the other way, I think I am justified in asking for one... --Gwern (contribs) 03:48 7 June 2008 (GMT)
