[edit] BDSM translation

Thanks for the message, Nemissimo. I had a look at the article a\earlier today, and it looks in pretty solid shape as it is now. I gather for your comments that you want it to get to featured status and I would be happy to support you i that. Having said that, you should know that the en.Wikipedia is rather conservative as far as FA stuff goes, and some articles nominated for Featured status get torpedoed simply for their subject matter. In any event, this seems like a fun task, and something to occupy me for the next week or so. I'll get started today. Please contact me as the revisions begin, with more guidance as to what we need here. Nice to meet you! Jeffpw 09:53, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] bdsm template

BDSM navigation template Template:BDSM i divided into groups. Please check and make corrections. Thanks. Lara_bran 08:52, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for look. Also for history of BDSM, antient indian book Kama Sutra describes 1. slapping and corresponding moaning sounds and 2. biting by teeth or marking with nails. Is it related to BDSM by any chance? i saw a slapping image in your translated article. Thanks. Lara_bran 08:31, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
For ref: slapping and moaning, Nails, teeth. Or will it be OR? Thanks. Lara_bran 08:36, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Nope, it's not OR. The Kama Sutra describes these aspects of pleasure by obviously connecting pain and pleasure, therefore it clearly shows a historical relevance to sadomasochism. ;-) thanks a lot for the ref.! --Nemissimo 10:13, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. But this translation(ref) is some 100 years old, english changed a bit later. You can see article for more refs in case necessary. It was already there in your translation! Oh. Me little new to BDSM. Lara_bran 13:15, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ring of O

My ability to contribute to smiki.de (where I have an account) is much more limited than your ability to contribute to en.wikipedia. AnonMoos 14:07, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

I'm in contact with the smiki-sysops (nice guys) and work a litle on :de... ;-) if there is anything I can do please give me a hint, I'll be happy to give a hand if possible! Kind Regards.--Nemissimo 15:17, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
I would have liked to improve the Kajira article there, but my German-language skills are quite inadequate to the task; all I ended up doing was adding the Kajira Kef symbol image to the article... AnonMoos 00:53, 29 September 2007 (UTC)
Well we could try the following... create a working space on your user page there and put your English text in it. I can either start translating it into German (don't worry, my German seems to be of a higher standard than my English ;-) ) or we can create a /translation page to the article's talk page, indicating "translation in progress" just as I did with BDSM here. Anyway it would be great to start with a smaller or medium sized article ;-). 80 K , like BDSM is a hell of a lot of work. ;-) Anyway let's see what we can accomplish by team working on it. If you have any problem in translating parts of today's version of the article into English I'll be happy to help as well. Kind Regards. --Nemissimo 07:30, 29 September 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The above plan is quite a bit more ambitious than what I had in mind. I just wanted to make sure that the http://www.smiki.de/Kajira article clearly distinguishes between what's in the Gor books and on-line chat-rooms. For example, the sentence «Sklaven dürfen nicht in der ersten Person reden. Es gibt kein "ich" , "mir" oder "mein" in ihrem Wortschatz.» only applies to certain on-line roleplaying chatrooms (not even all chat-rooms), and is not true of the original Gor books by John Norman. [edit] BDSM

I have some, but not a ton of the equipment shots - dammit. But I *do* have some; mostly, I photographed the girls. I went to Rebecca's Hidden Chamber, the premiere BDSM dungeon in New York (voted "Best of" by Citysearch - haha) for an article I am writing on Wikinews entitled "What it takes to run an S&M dungeon" or "Life in an S&M dungeon" or something like that. I'm not done uploading the photos, but if you want to keep a watch on Commons:Category:BDSM Dungeon that's where you will find them. I'll let you know when the article is up; I interviewed both the owners of the dungeon (Rebecca and Bill) and three of the mistresses. --David Shankbone 17:44, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Oops

I am sorry, Nemissino. Sometimes I have more messages that come in at the same time after I am logged out, and I overlook one when I check. I was not intentionally ignoring you. I'm having a look at the article now, and will reply after I do so. I only wish I had been more help. Between my job and the other things I do online, I sometimes don't manage to do everything I intend to, or don't do it as completely as I would like. Jeffpw 09:04, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Quick question for the copy edit: You refer to the sub a few times as "Itself". Do you do this intentionally to depersonalize the sub, or were you not sure how to render it in non-sexist language? I'm changing it to "him or herself", but can change it back if it was intentional. Jeffpw 09:21, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
I wasn't sure how to render it in non-sexist language. That was kind of tricky. In generell the entire article is supposed not to "judge" Bottoms or Tops in any way. --Nemissimo 09:29, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
OK to your reply above. The text comes across as entirely NPOV so far.
Two points: 1) I think it needs a lot more refs. Perhaps you can check out the EN version and see if their refs can be fit into this article version. 2) I am still not done with the copy edit (for which I feel very guilty and offer my apologies). I have the next three days off from work, so should have a lot of time to get it done then. PLEASE drop me a reminder to get going on it if you don't see any progress by say 12:00 tomorrow (in other words, crack that whip! :-P ). I, too, want it up and running ASAP. I have made a lot of progress this morning, but have to start getting ready to go to work for evening shift. Jeffpw 11:06, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Copyedit finsihed

It's not perfect, but I have gone through the entire article now and proofread and edited. It could probably use another pair of eyes, but (after discussing it on the talk page and showing your version) you could consider transferring it to the real article. Additionally, I mentioned the copy editing in this month's newsletter (see bottom of my talkpage for the letter) so others might drop by and give it a looksee. Take care, and please feel free to hit me up for any more help. I'm only sorry it took me so long to finish it. Jeffpw 21:19, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] BDSM

Thanks for the note. I have to tell you, the BDSM page is way, way over-imaged. Can't it be trimmed down or a gallery introduced? --David Shankbone 14:54, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I'll think about a resolution.--Nemissimo (talk) 15:02, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
I do know that there are quite a lot of images in this article, but I can't find a single one which is redundant. From my point of view this article is using its imagery to show very different aspects of BDSM. Since most of the pictures are linked to other articles, they do allow the reader to have a pretty good overview on the lemma while showing what is described in the text. Actually I believe the article would loose a lot of its informational quality if the nummber of images were significantly reduced. ... Well it is a complex and multifaceted topic. ;-) Maybe you have an idea what to do without losing information or atmosphere. --Nemissimo (talk) 16:32, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
I think it's the same philosophy that goes into when topics are broken off into separate articles. For instance, many of the things pictured have their own articles, and I don't know if it is necessary to graphically illustrate the minutia of BDSM on a page that discusses the concept generally. This is an area for you and the page to decide - I don't have any plans to take out images. But if you submit it for peer review, I would be surprised if the massive amount of images, which produces image stacking where the images go beyond the text and leaves white space, would go without mention. --David Shankbone 22:59, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
I like the images. Especially the woman tied to the staircase and the woman on the St. Andrews cross. Maybe you should re-arrange them so they go back and forth? Oh, and if you could find any stiletto heeled picks, that might be nice :-P Jeffpw (talk) 23:04, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
I'm certainly not anti-image, but I think they can be re-arranged and perhaps a gallery--say of accoutrement in one section--could be introduced here and there. Do you know what I think is a great-looking page? PETA - I think that is one of the best pages I've seen for incorporating images, quotes and criticism throughout an article. --David Shankbone 23:10, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Forgive me if I don't look dear. :-S Jeffpw (talk) 23:14, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
You and that beaver coat!!! --David Shankbone 23:43, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

To be quite frank, I have no idea what to do about it (reasons see above). On the one hand it would be great to lay ground for a future featured article, on the other hand I would feel kind of "untrue" to the subject if I would reduce the information given in the article in order to archive it. It may sound strange, but I hope you know what I'm talking about. Well this is not :de ;-), so I will try my best to meet the standards of this project. I'll have to think about it. At the moment I'm a little at a loss with it. --Nemissimo (talk) 23:18, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

If you have changes for the article on smiki I will be glad to help. How about you writing a few bullet points here for the most important changes for a start? I'll will try to integrate them on smiki next week. After this is done we can see how it worked and continue with futher editing....--Nemissimo 14:28, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

I've started to correct it according to your suggestions above. If you deliver further content I'll be happy to integrate it.--Nemissimo (talk) 09:07, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

How about just saying that third-person self-reference (in place of 1st person singular pronouns) is used occasionally in the Gor books (in a few specific situations), and that it's certain role-playing chatrooms which strictly ban 1st-person pronouns in the speech of Kajirae in all circumstances. By the way, I answered your comments over at Wipipedia... AnonMoos (talk) 15:58, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Apron

Being a confirmed lexophile, I was curious as to how "apron" could have come up as a translation for the negotiations preceding a session. The only thing I could think of was that one meaning of "apron" is the paved area next to an airplane hangar, the part of the field the airplane goes over before entering the hangar. This sounded consistent with what you said at the talk page, "vorfeld" -- my German is small and very rusty, but "before - field" was pretty apparent. In the metaphorical sense, the "field" of negotiation, "before" the session. I went to Leo's as you suggested, and sure enough, one definition of "Vorfeld" is "apron of an airfield". So, "Vorfeld" might have these two meanings, (physical area and preliminary negotiation), but "apron" in English didn't. "Prelude" or "preliminary activities" -- Auftakt? Anyway, it's fun to explore these word things, and the moral is that robots still cannot translate as well as humans :) Unimaginative Username (talk) 04:31, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

The original meaning is the metaphorical one, the "field" of negotiation, "before" the session, the preliminary negotiation. Believe me, translating the article was though, I'm glad, that there doesn't seem to have been an other major glitch. ;-) All this proofs how important copy editing really is. To me it always gives a great insight how different these two languages are as soon as you want to translate more complex content. ;-) Especially such multidimensional terms are always highly interesting. I've translated plenty :en articles to the German language Wikipedia. There was never a real task in it... I think you just have to be a native speaker in order to get it done. There is a certain beauty in seen this complex system of cultural interaction. At the very end I've the impression that the really demanding aspect in translating is the cultural background. Even living in a globalized world, watching the same tv shows everyday, its sometimes amazing to realize how different the views on certain topics are. I grew up in an area full of GIs. Talking to them in an bar (no matter if they were noncoms or officers) I was always amazed on the very different attitudes in the US and Europe. At the beginning I believed that this might be due to their profession, later living in the US and Asia for a while, I realized that every single culture is so incredibly unique in its inherent picture/conception of living on this planet... at the very end, this is one of the biggest miracles of live. ;-) I love exploring these cultural differences. Wikipedia is very useful in doing that. (Sometimes I feel a little sad that there seem to be only a very few contributors for example from the UK. :en has a very strong US-American perspective on many topics. I do see why, but sometimes I have the impression, that an added international perspective might be highly interesting and enriching many articles.)--Nemissimo (talk) 08:57, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
PoisonIvy and Nemissimo: I'm sorry to have fallen off the planet. I got completely burnt out with the whole copy-editing thing (not your article, the whole project), but I want to wish all of you the best of luck with your article. Yes, the more cultural and national barriers we can bridge, the better the whole world will be. Stay safe and be well. Unimaginative Username (talk) 21:52, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
