[edit] Basic Information
It was established in 1957 at the intersection of New Street and Belvenia Avenue. It was named after Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, a British admiral who defeated Napoleon's navy at the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805. The school celebrated the 200th year since Nelson's victory in 2005 with colourful events and staff dressed as characters from the day. A cubist mural of Nelson's ship, the HMS Victory, painted by local artist and former teacher Robert Bateman, hangs above a staircase in the school's Canada Foyer. A scale model of the ship can also be found in the library. Although the school had been the last non-semestered school in the Halton region, Nelson has changed to the semestered system as of September 2006. This is in part to prevent students from leaving Nelson to attend a semestered high school. Nelson hosted a weekend to celebrate its 50th anniversary in September, 2007.
[edit] Campus

The school is two stories high with a square design that has the cafeteria at the center of the school. The school has two gyms, a large one and a small one, a weight room, a library, multiple computer labs and a stadium for football and track events.
[edit] Athletics
Nelson is a school that has a strong focus on their athletics with many Senior and Junior teams as well as a few midget teams. Nelson's main focus athletically is the Senior Boys Football team although Nelson fans can be seen almost anywhere a Nelson team is playing. Nelson celebrates its athletes every year at the annual athletic banquet where awards are given out for athletic excellence. Nelson's main athletic rivals are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Assumption Crusaders.
